This is a question that has been plaguing me for several years. I was kid who fancied comic books and their related spin-offs. Obviously Marvel and DC kicked the most arse in the early eighties in this genre so I wanted to be a fan of both. Shocking maybe, but I was a wide-eyed wee kid, I didn't exactly care about cross-pollination - all I knew is that I wanted more superheroes!
To make a long story short, Marvel Comics just owned my life, but DC Comics material was short on supply. Why didn't it seem that DC hardly matched Marvel's output? So, just as the thread title asks: How the h@ll did you become a DC fan? (From a very concerned and distraught Marvel fan.) Last edited by Hulk_Is : 11-05-2009 at 12:41 AM. |

I grew up in the 70's.
Between Adam West as Batman, George Reeves as Superman, Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman and The Superfriends, I really had very little choice in the matter... not to mention Superman: The Movie, The Shazam! TV series, and the fact that I grew up on Australian B&W reprints of chiefly DC material. By contrast, Marvel had Lou Ferrigno, the Marvel Superheroes Cartoons, The 60's Spider-Man and Fantastic Four cartoons, and a bunch of godawful telemovies with Spidey and Cap (seriously, don't bother searching for them... they're THAT awful!). Marvel never really got a look-in. Last edited by Pól Rua : 11-05-2009 at 12:44 AM. |

See I watched those things regularly as well, and hell, I even used to spin around like Diana Prince! LOL I used to come home after school and catch reruns (by that time) to catch "Same Bat-Time, Same Bat-Channel", "Pow", "Blam", Wham", etc... I caught some fat-@$$ George Reeves episodes and was even more astounded by those early Superman cartoons. And Superfriends, my god, that alone could have sold one on DC forever... or so you could think.
![]() I obviously saw the Superman classic movies, Lois &Clark:The New Adventures(?), the late 80's Superman cartoon with high quality art artwork, and even The Flash series. Last edited by Hulk_Is : 11-05-2009 at 12:59 AM. |

I don't know. I'm 23, so I think my 'generation' should probably have preferred Marvel (really, I only know one person who read comics at all, even as a kid) but their heroes and their books never captured me the way DC's did. New Gods, Green Lantern, Legion of Superheroes...those were the best.
Perhaps because it's a more sci fi oriented universe? I used to be very keen on the Marvel Cosmic scene, as defined by Starlin, but quickly came to realize that it was mostly drek (sorry Starlin fans). |

ang lee's hulk movie actually brought me into comics. i read primarily the hulk books, following the title until wwh. when loeb took over, i stopped reading marvel and noticed on these boards that geoff johns' green lantern was making quite a buzz. i ordered sinestro corps trades on amazon and i've been a dc fan ever since.
![]() i'm 22 btw, if that makes any difference. i had dabbled in comics as a kid and liked them on and off (all different characters, mostly marvel) but got back into comics in my adult life with the hulk movie. |

I think the DC Super Powers cartoon, along with it's terrific toyline, is what really got me into DC Superheroes as a kid. Then came the re-runs of the Adam West Batman tv series, and of course the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman tv show as well (after that, how could you NOT be a fan?). Not to mention the airings of the Chris Reeve Superman films Then the summer of 1989 hit, and Burton's Batman pretty much sealed the deal on me being a lifelong DC Comics.
I liked Marvel quite a bit, but I don't remember Marvel getting a whole lot of play outside the medium of comics when I was a young lad. Other than the Incredible Hulk re-runs of course. I wasn't even made aware that Spider-Man had a live action tv show during the 1970's until I happened to catch it on the USA channel one summer night at about 2am in the morning! Though in 1993, Marvel finally had a success on their hands (that wasn't a low budget Captain America/Punisher attempt), which was the X-Men animated series on FOX.

I read only DC comics when I was a kid, I was a huge Batman fan. I got back into them later on in my teen years and continued to read DC for Batman, then are started getting into other heroes like Green Lantern

I read comics..... never really went with a publisher. Sure i was all marvel for the first few years of my comic reading life but that was purely a budget thing since the Ultimate U was so compact and interesting(at the time anyway). Since I switched to trades a few years ago i find im even more scattered about.
I love the DC universe. The Flash, Batman, Green Arrow.... Blue Beetle all favourites of mine but as a whole i find DC to be one of the weakest companies interms of titles i buy. Dark Horse and Dynamite even beat poor old DC. With vertigo and Wildstorm its a different story but strictly speaking of the DCU titles, they dont have whatever component that so many other books i love can offer. I'm not a hater so dont get all ruffled up and start screaming about how DC is the king....... i love the DCU but that doesnt translate into me buying alot of its output. |

i'm a hardcore Marvel fan since I'm 10. But recently I picked up Identity Crisis and Infinite Crisis, and ooohhh boy it's so damn good.
Currently I'm hooked on Blackest Night. One question though: Why DC always kill their characters and bring them back to life? |
