When I think iconic, I think of characters who are extremely well-known OUTSIDE the comic book world. That, regardless of how their books are selling, consists of exactly three:

Wonder Woman
Catwoman
Supergirl (still, a direct knockoff of a guy hero).

Gender aside, have there been ANY comic icons who have become household names in the last 20 years? You don't have to know any sports to know who Gretzky or Woods or Ali or the Williams sisters were or are.

I think it's more of a reflection of the low position of comics in the general media marketplace that the funny books haven't produced any iconic new characters in a generation or two.

As we mentioned, Storm is pretty well known outside of comicdom, thanks to the movies.

As for new characters in the last 20 years, you're right to say that there haven't been any "household names", but there have been some big successes.

Deadpool has been in a slew of cartoons and video games, and has his own movies in the works.

Static had a very successful cartoon for 4 seasons, which convinced DC to buy the rights to Milestone comics

.....and, that's it I guess.

I thought the question was restricted to comics. Storm was in comics forever before Halle Berry made her famous. Most people didn't know Iron Man until the movie. My definition of iconic comic book characters are those who became icons straight from the comic book world, not their later exposure by
TV or movies. And the three women I mentioned are the only three that qualify.

I would say Emma Frost as rising in status after appearing in "Wolverine and the X-men". I would definetely classify her as iconic.

But then can you count Catwoman or Wonder Woman, who arguably became icons because of Eartha Kitt and Lynda Carter playing them on TV?

I would have thought Julie Newmar was the one who made Catwoman iconic. Or was the last season replacement really more popular?

I completely forgot about her. But more or less, I was saying that Catwoman and Wonder Woman weren't really "icons" until they started appearing on TV.

She probably would not quality under most definitions of "iconic". But she does fulfill the original requirement of not being a rip-off of an existing (male) hero.

I would say it has definitely helped up her status, but shes not there yet. She is there in comic world, but outside of comic world.

Thats also part of the problem with the show being on Nicktoons, as opposed TAS being on Fox, it not as available to as many people. Everyone keeps saying people know Storm from the movies. Everyone I know knew Storm from TAS.

I figure it is difficult since Wonder Woman has a hard time doing it and she is the definition of iconic heroine.
I honestly think Storm could carry her own book if her stories took place more within the mainstream MU, and not soley having to do with all things X-related. I believe she is the only other character beside Wolverine that can transcend the X-titles.

One of the reasons why Storm is so big is because she recieves a push in virtually ALL the entertainment fields. She's in the movies, the cartoons, the toylines, and perhaps most importantly, the video games.

Emma only has only been in like two video games, has a starring role in one cartoon, and had a ten second cameo in one of the movies. I think she needs waaay more exposure before she can be considered iconic.

Storm could actually be bigger. the fact that DC and marvel writers compared her to WW was astonishing. the current position she is now isnt her best. her best bet is to leave BP get her on book dealing with kenya, egyptian, ashake, brood, khan and m'rin problems. she has so many villains who want back at her. like hela and loki. storm is a case that some writers might actually be looking at but puttin on hold for now. we ALL know CC wants a piece of storm. again Ms.marvel is like marvel's powergirl. she is good with her own book but not as unique as storm.

Storm is iconic because she was the leader and star of Marvel's most popular title for years. Because of that she was put into basically ALL forms of media. She is the THE most iconic/prominant woman at Marvel. Invisible Woman is a close second.

Ms. Marvel is the one getting a push. Her series isn't that good, not critically acclaimed, not a top seller, but Marvel wants her in the spotlight. Until recently she was basically the character that Rogue stole her powers from.

And like I said. Emma is not iconic to the general public (I would say she is, within fandom). She does need more exposure. And hopefully she'll get it. They have even started making Emma Frost/White Queen halloween costumes. Emma isn't even top 10 most iconic woman at Marvel. Put she's become iconic/prominant (within the comic world) in a short period of time, which generally only leads to being in the media more.
