1. Batman Year One.
2. Batman: A Death in the Family 3. Batman: The Killing Joke 4. Arkham Asylum 5. Dark Knight Returns. I was torn between Death in the Family and JLA Volume 1 by Morrison and Porter, because that sets up a lot of Batman's modern characterization and what not, but the Death of Jason is so huge. I was also considering Tower of Babel. Plus I like this as a 5 volume "Life of the Bat" set, from start to finish, a war with casualties, tragedy, and an ending that just cements Batman's motif of "Fighting a war I can never win" and celebrating his indomitable drive. These five book I feel give a broad understanding of the character and are exceptional accessible, allowing new readers to take this basic "Life of the Bat" and branch out as they please filling in pieces and expanding the story.

1) Joker OGN (insanity of the world)
2) All Star Batman (kind of the point to this series, no?) 3) Batman & Robin (very accessible) 4) Arkham Asylum: Serious House on a Serious Earth (look at all the rogues!) 5) Batman: Was Drums (brilliant brilliant writing) and thats it!

1. Joker - I read this after the Dark Knight film, it's the one that made me want to start getting Batman again. It's the twisted twin of Killing Joke but even sicker.
2. Ego - a very good explanation of who he is and why he does it. It's dark in theme I think but balanced with beautiful art 3. Arkham Asylum - just a classic 4. Under the Hood - When Batman Begins came out I read this and recently bought the collection to get the bits I missed. I think the return was a great idea and you need it to understand Jason Todd and the new Red hood. 5. Son of the Demon - another classic more mature type book, shows how Talia and Bruce were engaged and the birth of Damian Wayne which is important. And that Ra's and Bruce were not always enemies. This is also my favourite Batman artist. I'd say Dark Knight Returns and Killing Joke of course but alot of people have already talked about those. |

Yeah but it's still symbolic of Batman's greatest failure and it has synergy with DKR with all the Robin costume imagery.
Plus while JLA Volume 1 sets up how Batman is to the DCU at large and is imo better then A Death in the Family, I feel aDitF has more relevance to the Bat mythos at large.
