Start with "The Long Halloween".

I'm not even kidding.

if you're a fan of Arkham Asylum, you need to pick up "Arkham Asylum: Living Hell" by Bryan Azzarello. It's amazing, and there's a TON of nods to this story in the game.

They are also pretty new reader friendly.
The game only comes out in Australia today - can't wait to finish work!!!

It's tricky to recommend the current books to the new reader - although with the death of Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson stepping up to Batman that's a pretty good jump on point - because we don't know how they're going to play out.
I enjoy Batman And Robin, but am waiting for the collections on the others.
What is the current story where Bruce Wayne Dies?

The current story is "Batman Reborn", which is focusing on Dick Grayson (the original Robin) in the batsuit, and Bruce's biological son Damian as Robin.

Bruce Wayne's "death" is technically in Final Crisis, but the events leading up to current events are covered in Batman and Son, The Black Glove, and Batman: RIP.

Ok thanks this seems to be the one that i will be starting on. What is the artwork like??

Batwoman in Detective Comics - I highly recommend you get this. Kate Kane is Batwoman and the art is beautiful. You don't need to know anything about this character, this is her origin story basically. You won't be disapointed.

Which episode would you rekonmend i start at?

I believe Jim Lee and Tony Daniel were artists during those periods, which equals some incredibly nice eye candy.

Batwoman's current story arc began three months ago in Detective Comics #854. This is the one with art worthy of gallery treatment...absolutely stunning to look at. And Greg Rucka brings talented writing into the mix, too. Win-win.

Hey all. I recently had a friend tell me that knightfall was a good series as well, he happened to have all of them in his closet, so I'm reading through those until I get paid again and can order the other comics you have all recommended. I have to say I'm rather enjoying it so far!

If you're going for monthlies I suggest:
Batman & Robin, Detective Comics, Adventure Comics, Ultimate Comics Avengers and Ultimate Comics Spider-Man.

Just start at the beginning if you can. Read as many as possible or at least find the storyline for each one. Then once you have an idea take a little time and research what each comic is about and then you will have a better idea of which ones you might want. The site in my signature is attempting at a synopsis for every batman comic, movie etc. added to by members along with reviews for all of the same. But its just getting started in fact I thought the site was dead but it was in the process of a major overhaul. I hope it picks up because Im a big movie batman fan and am trying to learn about the comics myself. Im sure you can find other sites that can give you a breakdown on some of the comics or might specialize in a specific timframe.

http://www.mycomicshop.com/search?q=batman

That has a huge list of batman comics huge. Im sure this site will give you a ton of info too, although im only on the forums here so haven't really checked it out.

The artwork is by Adam Kubert (Batman & Son), J.H. Williams III (The Black Glove) who is arguably the best artist in the business and current artist in Batwoman and Tony Daniel (Batman R.I.P.). You don't need Final Crisis to figure out Batman's death but if you want to read it you need the Final Crisis collection too. I recommend the hardcovers because they sit so nicely on a book-shelf.

Detective Comics #854 - It's awesome dude. Seriously worth your time. I also think you would like "The Unknown Soldier" by Vertigo Comics (a sub-division of DC Comics), the concept and violence is unreal plus the research into Uganda's war-torn history is true and confirmed (Tells you at the end of each issue or trade). The first trade just came out for Unknown Soldier and it's the first story-arc (6 issues) for $9.99

I'm telling you to check out http://www.instocktrades.com/ for all your trade paperback needs because you get 37% off the cover-price of each book and if your order is over $50.00, they give you free-shipping. Way better than any LCS.

Are you interested in the single issues from the comic shop, or the collections, which collect the whole storylines?

If it's collections, and you want to be close to up to date, maybe start with Batman and Son.

If it's the single issues, Batman And Robin #1.

If you've got a comic shop nearby, chat to the guys at the counter - if they're any good, they'll be able to give you want you want, and give you a look at the different books.

But just to break it down, there's the single issues for the different titles that come out each month, then, these are bundled together into collections, usually called tpbs, and are usually collected based on the overall storyline told.
So usually, if someone just says 'check out this book' they are talking about the single issues, but if they mention a story name - Year One, Long Halloween - they are talking about the collection.
The collections can be good because you can get great stories from years ago - like with books or a dvds - although monthlies can give you a more regular hit of the character - like a tv show.

Just a note guys, new readers aren't going to know who the creators names are - so giving them a link to the books write up, or some preview pages is a good idea.
Morrison and Cooke, though awesome creators, aren't really known outside of comics - so 'Morrison's take' isn't as revealing or exciting to them.
(Until they see it of course).

I would suggest starting with the flagship title - Batman & Robin #1, 2 & 3. This is the first story arc and #3 just came out last week.

No, you want Batman & Robin 1-3 (flagship title) and Streets of Gotham 1-3 (broadest story and cast). The Batman title is a poorly written and drawn echo of everything that's already in B&R.

Current story or current issue?

The DC Website will tell you all that is out now and coming up, though it takes a bit to get used to.
