Fleisher's also introduced the Three Camera Panning technology where there's three layers of backgrounds on different glasses, and when a character is moving, the farthest foreground moves normally, the middle background moves the opposite direction, and the far background moves normally. It creates a Three Dimensional, realistic look.

I judge animation from standards in the friggin 1940's.
As well you should.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though, but I always thought Disney first introduced the Three Camera Panning technology, or multiplane camera. IIRC, Disney first used the multiplane camera in "The Old Mill", as a dry run for its use later in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves".

I have a coffee table book called "The Fifty Greatest Cartoons", which features a listing of famous cartoons and a brief history of animation and its innovations. One thing that Fleischer studios did was they would build a three-dimensional 'set' for their cartoons on a twelve-foot diameter turntable, and turn the set incrementally with each frame of animation shot, so the cartoon characters would move against a real 3D background. Check out "Popeye Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves" for a stellar example.

Fleischer also perfected the rotoscope technique of drawing animation frames over a projection of someone moving, to more accurately capture that movement. Three Betty Boop cartoons used this technique to allow a cartoon character to move like Cab Calloway while belting out one of his songs. I think they may have used some rotoscope to produce more fluid human movements for some scenes in their Superman cartoons.

Essentially what the animation studios of the 30s and 40s lacked in money and tech, they made up for in talent and innovation.

Oh, and if you were wondering, the top cartoon in 'The Fifty Greatest Cartoons'? "What's Opera, Doc", Chuck Jones for Warner Brothers.

It's not entertaining to see four 30 minute episodes to see 2 characters power up bu squatting and glouing very brightly and telling the opponent what's in store, miss, and spend another 4 episodes gearing up for the next shot. When they did fist fight, they just use the same animation over and over.

And doesn't all anime have wacky hair characters? It's kind of their thing. I saw it on a anime mini-doc in a DVD I have.

Oh yeah, they had their own physics which I didn't like. It was just so overboard when they fought and took so damn long to fight. I wouldn't say it's the worst cartoon ever, but it's up there for me. Why it has sucha fan base, I would never know. There was a marathon of it on cartoon network awhile back and I sat through like 6 episodes throughout the day to see if I could like it but nothing happened in every episode and thought it was bloody boring.

Ok, you can say I don't like Anime now even if I enjoy Cowboy Bepop and Trigun. You can also say I'm less of a man because I probably like shojo or whatever it is you call it. Or you can say I have to look for and rent/buy the unedited uncut versions to get the full experrience and read the manga.

HAs anyone forgotten the mighty ducks cartoon where the Mighty Ducks where space ducks who saved the world between hockey games?

Up to a point. Take the Spike version. They brought John K. back and it was even WORSE than the stuff after he left the Nick series. Anything done by Spike, MtV, or Comedy Central sucks ass...trying in vain to be the next Southpark.

I'm not going to comment on older cartoons because as kids you will probably like the stupidest things, I'm sure I loved some stinkers.

Of todays offering I'll throw in things like Megas-XLR. I'm sorry, I know alot of people like this show but it's just sooooo stupid.

Tom Goes to the Mayor. Ummm, so not funny.

Their are tons of "bad" cartoons on right now, but I wouldn't qualify any of them as thw worst except the two above.

Everyone who says Megas sucks just say that because they don't get the anime jokes.

As opposed to the goofy Sonic where he'd dress up as all kinds of characters, or the overly spastic Anime versions shown on the FoxBox. There are only a few times where I think an American version has improved on a Japanese import; ABC Kids' Sonic is one of them.

Well, ya see, I just hate Sonic. Mario's cartoons, on a side note, weren't too good, but it was the 80's, so it's forgivable.

The more times I see it, the more and more I'm enjoying "The Batman". Sure they mess up the history of him, the Penguin can fight, and all that jazz, but if you forget about that, the action is nice, the animation is fluid, the voice acting is good and some of the story lines are pretty interesting. (like the ongoing clayface shtick.)

You like "The Batman" but hate Spongebob. How sad.
I actually do like "The Batman", except for some episodes(like the ones with Mr. Freeze and when the Joker made cards out of people).

Here's another list of mine of some completely awful cartoons.
Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi
Tom Goes To The Mayor
Winx Club
Battle Bedamon(possibly one of the worst shows period)
Beyblade
Code Lyoko
Shinzo
Sonic X
Full Metal Alchemist(I'm going to get a lot of hits about this one)
Backyardigans(I almost wished I didn't have summer break once I saw this on Thursday)

I agree with all but Teenage Robot(sure, it's not that good, but it's not that bad either), Family Guy, The Batman(it has some crappy episodes, but still), every Sonic cartoon(sorry, but my childhood memories of the old show is too good for me to refuse though I hate it now) and Teen Titans.

Actually I don't like The Batman. After the first episode it has just left me cold. The stories aren't interesting and while the animation is good I like a decent story as well.
