I personally love Ross' take on Batman (as well as 90% of the other characters he paints), though I do know a pretty good pile of people that aren't into the whole "pseudo-realistic look.

I didn't know so many people disliked Lee. He is my favorite artist, honestly. I love the way he draws Batman.

I think Ross and Lee are two peas from the same pod: techically good, beautyful art, but very static, better suited to covers or artbooks than sequential storytellin.

I love Jim Lee. He was my favorite artist when I got into comics when I was a kid, and he's still my favorite.
I mean lets be honest, he gave the X-Men a look that defined them for, what almost 15 years? Other artists contributed to that over the years, but things were mostly consistent with that initial set of designs from X-Men #1. Nobody gave them a redesign that stuck until Frank Quitely. To me, Jim Lee represents the often hated "90's Style" because he very much helped define it, and nobody was more imitated. All the best things about the 90's can be seen in his work. All of the worst things about the 90's are elements that people poorly imitated from him. Pin-up poses weren't nearly as big until people saw him doing BADASS pin-up style poses inside panels that helped move the story forward and looked awesome. That said...I don't think his style fits what Frank Miller was/is trying to do in ASBARTBW. Not the way Frank Quitely did with Morrisons Superman. I don't think Azzarello and Lee's Superman run was that great either, but that is once again because of such disparate styles and intents. But BRING ON THE HATERS. I loved Hush. It was exactly what I wanted, and being a big fan of Long Halloween and Dark Victory, I loved that it's story flowed partly from that.

You know those books ,learn X in 4 days, learn Y in 4 hours !
Same thing, magazines that teach you this generic jim lee west coast style, preaching that you will learn to draw like that in 6 hours or so.Get it ? |

Well Lee is a far better artist than a writter, the problem is he isn't a god writter. I still to this day wonders way DC brought his universe. To me it is just a bad X-men rip off.

I assume that they bought it because :
A. It sells reasonably well B. Jim Lee still has name value in the comics world C. There was more than likely an agreement that, because DC is backing his "pet projects", they'll get him to lend his name recognition and talent to their established characters to help boost sales |

As much as I respect Lee's abilities (he IS a good artist, just not IMO a perfect artist... nor is he the definitive Batman artist)... and I love Ross' technical abilities (his storytelling can be weak at times, it seems as if he redoes a lot of stock shots of characters, or pin-up style pieces and passes them off as panels)...
but for me... the real Batman artist will always be Neal Adams. |
