Default Go Gail!!!

A few days ago Blog@Newsarama contributer J. Caleb Mozzocco wrote an optimistic piece about women working in main stream comics.

Not long after, Heidi MacDonald, long time industry reporter and commentator, posted a link to the original article on her site, The Beat, along with her own insight.

The comments on The Beat article are upwards of 60 posts now but it was Gail's post (she being main example) that said exactly what I feel too.

"I don’t mean to offend anyone here, but threads like this make me a little sad. I think it’s a case of the readers being ahead of the commentators and publishers. I honestly believe we’re close to a point where the readers don’t much give a shit what flavor of person delivers the book they like, they just want the books they like

To be honest, I expected a lot more resistance from the readers than I have experienced, but instead, I get the same kind of enthusiastic support of other writers who broke in at the same time. The READERS don’t ask me what it’s like to be a woman in comics…they don’t much care. They want to know if Donna Troy is going to guest-star in Wonder Woman, or if Catman’s going to kill Deadshot some day. It’s the journalists and some publishers who can’t seem to get over the gender issue

.....
."

I know that there have been generations of women before that have helped pave the way for the likes of me, Gail included, but I've got to agree with her.

The only time I see my name mentioned by an industry commentator is to illustrate a feminist point, one way or the other, rather than the work we're actually doing, while the readers and bloggers on the other hand, are the complete opposite.

Well, I think Heidi's heartbeat is elsewhere.

If you were off doing indy comics you'd probably have a better chance of making her radar.

Speaking of being noticed, in all those posts over there no one bothered to mention Pia Guerra...

Yeah, most readers just want good comics, they don't care about the race, gender, sexual orientation, etc of the people who bring it to them.

Reporters by and large are looking for an "angle" to report on, some juicy tidbit to spice up their story, so they automatically go for "So what's it like being a ________ comic creator?"

Comics creators arent like movie,tv stars you dont need to see them or what they look like to like their work.

As long my comics are good thats all i care. You dont think wow how can someone of this gender or color write or draw like this thats really stupid.

Well said, they are the only ones that make big deal over it.

Considering "reporting" has taken on a predominantly tabloid nature as the years go by it's really no surprise. I know all I've ever cared about is the books don't suck. Make it worth my $2.40 (after 20% discount).
