NRAMA: Historically, do you have a favorite incarnation/version of Joker? Did someone just nail the character for you?

BA: You know, I really love what Frank did; but then, you have to consider what Alan Moore did with Killing Joke. Denny O’Neil did some great things with Joker—I thought Greg Rucka used him really well in Gotham Central. So I guess—no—there isn’t just one. (laughs)
Azzarello snubbed Brubaker, as the Gotham Cental verson of the Joker was co-written by Rucka AND Brubaker.

Although I consider Azzarello to be one of my favourite writers, I won't be buying this. Apart from Ra's and Talia, DC villains don't spike my interest. However his notion of a villain being someone who strikes against authority is very interesting. I read his 100 Bullets, and at first I thought of the Augustus Medicci, but Augustus is the paragon of authority.

But when you think about it, the villains in the bok are the Minute Men. And if you ever saw a pack of savage dogs...it's them

Azzarello apparently got several things wrong. Besides the fact no sane jury in the world would let Joker walk free after he is declared sane (which is a huge if itself in the first place), the Riddler is not the kind of villain who takes over turfs. He's the hit and run sort of criminal. Penguin and Two-Face, sure. But not Riddler.

Also, silent Harley? Harley is the type who never shuts up! Why to have her around if she's going to be nothing but background dressing?

It definetely sounds like he will be taking a lot from Heath Ledger's Joker. Should be interesting, at the very least.

Well, I doubt he'll be taking much from Ledgar's performance due to the fact that I'm pretty sure the book's been written before the flick came out.

But yeah, I wasn't planning on picking this up, but the mention of Harvey playing a part in the story means it's most likely a purpose. I mean, you expect me to pass up Two-Face drawn by Bermejo?!?

Characterization is going to be all over the place. From the way it sounds, all of the other A-list rogues are going to be cowering before Joker in this one. It's getting a little tiresome, imo.

And as far as Harley goes I think this quote from the artist sums it up: "like a stripper, don't talk to me, just dance baby." She's t&a at best.

Either way, as pretty as it looks I'll be skipping this one. I was sick of Joker even before TDK came out. Meh.

Yeah, I had trouble with that too. It's so unlikely, I'm inclined to think that the Joker's release might be a major story point.

He's definitely showing different takes on some of the characters and I'm OK with that, as he did say that this story won't be tied too heavily in continuity.
