Default Best Batman title for new readers?

I've recently discovered that my girlfriend, who usually doesn't like any of the comics I read (except for Bone, Groo and The Spirit), really likes the Burton Batman movies. I've offered to buy one Batman ongoing we can read together, but my only experience with Batman is the Showcase / Chronicles series, And I don't understand most of what's going on in the DC universe (I'm more of a Marvel guy). Is there a current ongoing that's friendly for new readers (preferably with shorter, 1-2 issue stories)?

Detective Comics. Just wait until RIP is over, though.

yup...detective comics
but issues 846-850 is one continuous story, so you might want to start at issue 846, or wait until issue 851...your choice (i would recommend the latter)

Detective Comics. Even though the current arc is a five part story it still follows the done-in-one format Dini has strutured for the book. Pick it up with #846 or wait until the current story is over.

I would suggest Batman: Year One, The Long Halloween and Dark Victory to start with, then the regular series.
