I kinda liked it, sure they made many glaring mistakes, but I personally loved Black Mask as a villain

It's not that bad, just fairly average really with quite a few unforeseen twists thrown in.
If you can get it cheap then I'd recommend it.
Oh, and it's nice to see another Brit on the boards, welcome!

Nope, they tottaly threw away the new Batman status quo that the book was going to set-up. All that reading is pointless and not worth it.

Yeah, what was War Games building up to? There was no pay off. Well, aside from killing a fan favorite character for.. what? Again, DC doesn't know where it is going with its characters. Too many cooks.

I personally disliked it. It was part of an era of Batman comics I wish I had skipped, so I'd suggest reading just about any other ones first.

Honestly, there are better Batman stories to spend your money on. Not terrible, but far from the best.

Well commisioner gordon and Oracle/babs Gordon were going to leave Gotham and the superhero stuff behind. There would be no more Robin. Batman was going solo and the cops now distrusted Batman.

All that was thrown out the window.

Don't bother. Nothing that it "changed" actually stuck.

to elaborate on what AlistairCrane said:

Detective Comics - No effect, its entire arc was pre War Games

Batgirl - relocated to Bludhaven, started going in a very interesting direction with Batgirl but then hit the brakes and went into their final arc.

Robin - relocated to Bludhaven. showed Tim as becoming more and more a Bruce-Lite, then focussed outside of the Batman "world" and more on mainstream DCU stuff.

Batman - up to OYL it was all about the return of jason, it did stay moderately consistent with WG, having Black Mask as main crime boss and expanding on him.

Gotham Central - had some interesting arcs about Batman being an "enemy" of the police and expanded the most upon the what the cops thought of WG

Gotham Knights - I quit this title by then so I don't care

Nightwing - Dick kept his leg injury for a bit and that's it

but really, OYL came and wiped everything clean

Abso-freakin'-lutely.

LOVED War Games - largely because I'm a huge Spoiler/Robin fan.

Also, if you can, track down No Man's Land. That was superb.

I don't get this attitude that a story isn't worth it if its changes don't stick at all.

There are plenty of reasons to not read a story, that it doesn't affect continuity shouldn't be one of them.

While I didn't like everything they did in these books (specifically in reference to a couple of characters), all in all I thought they were well written and very entertaining.

But there are several volumes of War Games, and you need to read them all, in sequence.
