Default Earliest Joker/Two-Face crossover

They first crossed swords in JOKER #1 but I seem to remember they met before that, probably in Arkham, as a prelude to the Joker series, Before that, I don't think they crossed paths-- right?

Gosh, I have no idea. Good question, though. Anybody?

I was actually trying to figure this out myself 2 days ago. I didn't read those specific issues but I do recall in the No Man's Land novel by Greg Rucka, when Arkham was destroyed due to the earthquake, Joker and Two-Face where there together and spoke for a little bit until Joker left Two-Face be.

Also, they've interacted a few times in the animated series.

Two-Face: Get out of my face, clown.
Joker: Which one?

Also, in an issue of the comic that was in continuity with the animated series, Joker tricked Two-Face into believing Grace (Harvey's then fiance) was cheating on him with Bruce and sent Two-Face on a rampage that eventually broke up all hope of Grace and Harvey being together. When asked why he would do something like that to Two-Face, Joker answers, "Because it's Tuesday."

Though I haven't found the answer, I am relatively sure that they hadn't met prior to September of 1971, which was Two-Face's first appearance since the Golden Age.

That would be my guess as well, but I'm certainly not positive about it.

Without access to a copy of Joker 1, I don't know whether or not I can provide an answer within the proper context. However, I think I know what you're refering to.

Batman 258 is a Two-Face story in which Harvey Dent escapes from Arkham. He runs along a corridor when suddenly a voice calls out from off-panel "Two-Face dear buddy-buddy, surely you won't quit this ghastly place without taking me - your friend of friends, the Joker!" Two-Face flips his coin which comes up scarred and the Joker is left behind threatening to make Dent pay at a furture date. (Now that I think about it - if the scarred side is the bad side, shouldn't he have freed the Joker?).

Batman 260 is a Joker story, in which the Clown Prince of Crime escapes from Arkham. His idea of a distraction is to release all of the inmates in Arkham (or a great number of them) and sic them on Batman. Joker is long gone when Batman is about to be killed by an inmate. He's saved however, when Dent beats his attacker up telling Batman that had the bad side come up, he would have assisted in his murder. Interesting that Joker would free Two-Face two issues after he vowed vengeance upon him.

I have this memory of Batman 258 paralleling Joker 1 which I haven't read in a long, long time. Since Arkham is referenced by name in each story and since it would have just been introduced in the comics, I get the feeling that my memory isn't playing tricks on me. Can someone remind me what the exchange between the Joker and Two-Face consists of?

Two-Face didn't make all that many appearances prior to 1971. I've done a cursery check in Overstreet and did not find any Golden Age issues of Batman, Detective, or World's Finest containing both villains. Of course, this was only a quick browse. It's possible I missed something.

Unless the writer wrote that coin flip as helping Joker out rather than doing an evil deed. For example: Heads I help Joker, Tails I don't.

Also, I forgot, but the two were also together in Morrison's Arkham Asylum. When that doctor takes away Two-Face's coin and switches him to playing cards, his mind really gets messed up and he can't go to the bathroom without checking with the cards first. Joker makes fun of him when he pees on himself and also at the end Joker lets Two-Face his coin to decide if Batman stays or leaves and Two-Face gets the scarred side but lies and says Batman gets to leave, saving Batman.

I take that back. Two Face only appeared seven times in the 40's and 50's (including the impostors) and I'm pretty sure Joker was not in any of these stories.

Here's a scan from Batman 258

Arkham Asylum is a great example where Morrison sets up a difficult story for himself to write his way out of and manages to succeed. The "Why not let Two-Face decide what to do with me?" "Harvey? Brillant!" scene was perfect.
