Note: Kenshin, as a little kid, even before he got any training, buried all his captors and fellow slaves in the time it took Hiko to wander over to the village (to ask if Kenshin had come by after Hiko had rescued him) and back. Without any apparent tools, IIRC. And he made grave markers for them too.

Even without training, Kenshin's definition of "weak" is pretty crazy.

Also, Kenshin only started deteriorating after learning his final attack, which was too powerful for his body type. Before that, he had no problem casually smacking lampposts through second story windows and knocking seven foot tall people flying by flicking his out of its sheathe at their chin hilt first, with his thumb. And that was during the Kyoto arc where he was explicitly unable to access most of his speed and strength due to him subconsciously restraining himself out of fear of becoming Battousai.

And is it just me, or does the Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu seem like an exceptionally nasty and vicious style? I mean, yes it focuses on leaving the enemy alive, but it mainly does that by breaking joints, destroying weapons and using some pretty nasty counter moves, IIRC.

It's a time period/society where people are killing each other with relative impunity. One doesn't leave an opponent capable of fighting back or even tracking someone down for a rematch in that kind of society. Crippling them is a kindness - at least they're alive and capable of hobbling around.

A busted elbow might not even be crippling, though it would likely prevent serious swordwork in the future.

I agree, but you wouldn't expect it from seeing Kaoru and Yahiko outside of combat (or even inside of combat, most of the time). Even Kenshin generally doesn't cripple his homicidal maniac opponents in battle, in the manga. Of course, in the manga, Kaoru is fully willing to stay behind while she lets Yahiko invade gunsmugglers houses and face off against assassins by himself, so I guess that kind of dissonance isn't unusual for her.
