Tonight's episode was the eventful start of the second season, filled with many humorous moments as well as some outright frank discussion bringing various characters up to speed on various subjects.
Susan is still held at gunpoint when Mike comes in. Mike pleads with Zach, when Susan attacks Zach, who drops the gun. Susan picks up the gun, but is attacked by Mike's dog, accidentally firing the gun, the bullet firing out the window into an alcoholic lady neighbor's bottle (which she believes is a sign of God!). Susan injures herself by biting her lip and is treated at the hospital, where Mike secretly tells the police that they don't want to press charges against Zach. Julie overhears this and tells Susan, who confronts Mike. Mike tells her how he left Paul in the desert and the truth about Paul and Mary Alice, the taking of Diedre's son, and the murder of Diedre. Mike recievs a call from the police saying that Zach turned up dead. Mike and Susan go to ID the body, but it's not Zach. Mike doesn't react as Susan expected, and she realizes that Zach is Mike's son. Susan later apologizes for her reaction, but tells Mike that she can't be around Zach and therfore they can't move in together.
Edie's house is nearly done, and we learn that Felicia is still hospitalized.
Lynette interviews for a demanding job while Tom adjusts (poorly) to being a stay-at-home dad. Tom actually injures himself playing with his kids and Lynette has to take Penny the baby to her second interview. She convinces the admin to babysit for a few minutes, but the baby starts crying so Lynette brings the baby in while she interviews, impressing her potential new boss. She's hired, much to the dismay of her new manager.
Meanwhile Gabrielle is surprised to find John in her bed, but she's angry and kicks him out of the house. She then visits Carlos in prison, who gives her the silent treatment and demands a paternity test. Gabrielle goes to a clinic and actually takes another woman's results with the intention of Photoshopping them to show the results that Carlos wants. Gabrielle brings the doctored results to Carlos, who's still not happy. They argue and realize that neither of them are very good people.
Bree is dealing with Rex's death, but holding herself together as she "combats" Rex's grieving mother, Phyllis, who has inserted herself into the Van De Kamps' home and into Bree's planning of Rex's funeral. Bree threatens to keep Rex's mother away from the funeral, but her kids, who are both home, convince her otherwise. Also, Bree and Danielle introduce themselves to the Applewhites, and ask Betty to play the music in lieu of the church pianist who is out sick. At the funeral, Betty plays while the neighobrs are in attendance. It's an open casket, and the vamily walk by the coffin individually. Bree is visually bereft. Especially when she sees that Rex's mom put his prep school tie on the body. During the service Bree confronts Phyllis about the tie. Bree screams as the coffin is about to be closed. She surveys the audience and demands that Tom give her his tie. She takes Tom's tie and replaces the horrid orange one that Phyllis had put on the body. The VanDe Kamp kids are pretty embarrassed. Most of the neighbors are pretty stunned. After retying the acceptable tie perfectly, Bree says Rex looks magnificent. Betty continues playing, and Bree leaves the church.
Susan tells the other housewives the truth about Mary Alice having killed Diedre. The ladies discuss secrets and not caring abouit what goes on behind closed doors.
In the Applewhite's house, Betty isi playing the piano. Matthew brings her her a tray with dinner on it, with a flower. Betty pulls a gun from a drawer and gives it to Matthew. The two take the tray into the basement, into a locked room, and set it upon a table. Betty comments on the lovielness of the gesture of the flower and the two leave, as a restrained hand takes picks up the glass of water from the tray.
A great episode. A whole new mystery.
