I'm afraid that this league did not know a great success, mostly because of conflicting interests. It seems that after an undisclosed series of unfortunate events that involved a four-armed Nazi assassin, a massive explosion over the south pole, the Wimbledon tennis tournament, a walking pile of chocolate and the love life of certain members of the British Royal family, the league members went their separate ways.
OK, I caught the Python reference, but where does the 4-armed Nazi assassin come from?

You should have them organized by Sir Harry Flashman.

Afraid not. I would imagine that they weren't as memorable as Fu's series.

I imagine he might be the creation of a young Arnim Zola (the grandson of Emile Zola, author of Germinal, and a foe of Captain America), making use of the study of French biologist Jean Rostand on amphibian limb regeneration. (Jean is the real-life son of Edmond Rostand, creator of Cyrano de Bergerac).

But honestly, I think I just tried to come up with odd concepts for that list.

Sir Percy Blakeney- the Scarlet Pimpernel
Don Diego de la Vega - Zorro
Edmond Dantes - Count of Monte Cristo
    Christopher Walker - Phantom
Delphine Angua von Ubervald - Angua
Lady Katherine Ferres - the 'Wicked lady' (an actual individual but is thought to have been the 'Wicked lady' highwaywomen of English ballad and poem
    Hui Mulan

each of these individuals possesses two very distinct personalities so I think it would be fun to gather them together without revealing their heroic alter-egos to see how they would work as a team.
I think Don Diego would gravitate to leadership eventually while Dantes would excel at strategy. Angua, Hui Mulan, and Lady Kathering would astound their male counterparts by their ferocity in battle.
What have I always believed? That, on the whole, and by and large, if a person lived properly, not according to what any priests said, but according to what seemed decent and honest inside, then it would, at the end, more or less, turn out ok.

That would indeed make for an interesting dynamic. I wonder if Edmond Dantes could get along with the Scarlet Pimpernel, though.

A league for the year 1600 or thereabout :

Miyamoto Musashi, famed Japanese swordsman, who was the object of a famous biography by Eiji Yoshikawa and himself the author of a book of five rings. Excellent strategist on top of an amazing fighter.

Solomon Kane, the puritan swashbuckler from the works of R. E. Howard, ever drawn to the dark places of the world where he can fight the minions of satan. He and Musashi keep arguing about the proper way to handle a sword, with Kane being called an uncouth barbarian and Musashi a bloody heathen.

Mona Lisa, the enigmatic model of Leonardo Da Vinci's portrait. The lady should be in her dotage now by remains ever young. Is she immortal or did Leonardo first discovered the secret of Basil Hallward's picture of Dorian Gray? And why is it that she seems to know everything about Leonardo's life and inventions?

Porthos, baron of Vallon de Bracieux de Pierrefonds, the young and herculean young man who will be the heaviest of the Three Musketeers. Already a voracious trencher and a jolly brawler, Porthos will learn the finer points of swordmanship from Musashi and Kane. His amorous advances are constantly rejected by the three ladies of the team.

Doctor Faustus, the one from Marlowe's play and not the enemy of Captain America. Faustus sold his soul to the devil for power and knowledge, and the use of the demonic Mephistophilis as his servant for 24 years. Faustus is therefore a great asset to the league even though his deal is anathema to the puritan Kane. The latter endeavours to bring Faustus to contrition, thinking he may yet salvage his soul through the grace of God.

Red Sonya of Rogatino, the aging swordwoman who stood up to the forces of Suleyman the magnificent. She's the companion of Dark Agnes de Chastillon, another swordwoman who decided to live the life of a man rather than submit to the drudgery of marriage and hearth.

The Big Bad Wolf, who devoured Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother. This talking and devious creature is never to be trusted, but is useful in many situations. He is apparently gifted with several superpowers, including partial super-breath (though not super enough to bring down a brick house).

This League has been formed at the request of Pocahontas, whose people have discovered the remains of a temple to Cthulhu in America. The future of humanity might be at stake if the sons of R'lyeh, a corrupt secret society from Europe, manages to wake the Great Ancient that lies within. The League has to keep them from getting their hands on several artefacts of great magical power : the shards of the Holy Grail (you didn't know it had been broken, eh?), the Phrygian hat of Mithras, the foreskin of Abraham and a twig from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. (They already have Jesus' incorruptible afterbirth and the skin of the goat Amalthea).

    Oh, is this thread back?

Okay, how about the Fleet of Extraordinary Sailors? (I'm playing fast and loose with time periods here)

Fleet Admiral Horatio Hornblower. Assembles a special crew for a secret mission.

Captain John "Lucky" Aubrey, captain of the Surprise. Cunning adversary, brilliant strategist.

Billy Budd. Secretly rescued from a drumhead court-martial where he was framed for his captain's death, offered a second chance to redeem himself aboard Aubrey's crew.

Ishmael. Sole survivor of the Pequod. Signs on to Aubrey's crew, despite the superstitions of other crew members; they know what happened to the Pequod and don't want their ship to suffer the same fate.

Jack and Elizabeth Turner. Freed(temporarily) from the Flying Dutchman, Jack Turner reunites with his wife and son and offers his services to Hornblower's secret mission. Also vouches for...

Jack Sparrow. Given a choice between joining Hornblower's mission and a "short drop and a sudden stop", Sparrow chooses the path of enlightened self-interest. An unorthodox but capable sailor, but his loyalties are suspect.

Grace O'Malley, the Sea Queen of Connaught. Another loose cannon, but fierce in combat and skilled in seamanship.

Their opponents, a new brotherhood of the worst pirates of the sea:

Captain Clegg, aka Dr. Syn, aka the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. Sometimes hero, sometimes villain.

Captain Hook. A fop and a gentleman, but a vicious fighter who will stab you in the back.

    Long John Silver.

    Captain Kidd.

Captain MacHeath, aka Mack the Knife

Hector Barbossa and the crew of the Black Pearl.

A crisis that begins in Europe finds its way into America when the Soviet Union start trying to track down alien technology that is starting to show up around the world. James Bond is tasked to stop two KGB agents operating in the UK looking for a man with a blue box but in a dying sneer one agent leaks the fact that Russia is closer to its goals in the USA. M dispatches his best agent but the CIA isn't interested in sharing the glory on this one, so Bond is forced to seek local help on a mission that will take him across America.

    James Bond's team:

Mike Hammer: In his early fifties, Hammer is thinking about finally settling down with Velma when a serial killer comes to town and he's targetting children he claims are part of some Eugenics program. It is in tracking down this crazed killer (who was set on this mad path by the KGB) that Bond and Hammer first meet and form a grudging respect for each other. Hammer agrees to help Bond on his mission to stop the Commies in their crazy plot.

Travis McGee and Roberta Lincoln: With nothing better to do, Travis decides to go see a rocket launch from Cape Kennedy. All he's planning to do is watch men get shot into space, get something to eat, maybe find a girl, and then head back to his boat. All that gets wrecked however when he spots Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln emerge from a blue mist and head towards the Apollo 7 rocket. The rocket is secretly carrying a Nomad surveilance satelite that America plans to use to spy on the Soviet Union, except that its faulty and Gary knows that when the satelite falls it can lead to world war 3. After a quick explanation Travis decides to help change the course of the satelite for deep space. However before they can relax, two agents from SMERSH capture Gary Seven. In the course of searching for Seven, Travis and Roberta meet up with Bond and Hammer.

Nancy Drew: Now a twenty something who's finally started to think about having a more normal life (meaning less mystery) when she stumbles onto a murder. A friend of her's from college is murdered in his lab at the upstart company Chronowerx. She starts to suspect Soviet involvement when she stumbles onto Bond and the gang also investigating the death of a man who was helping the company revolutionize computer technology.

Can they stop the USSR from capturing all the alien and super technology that is beginning to show up in the USA, or will they like broken before the iron will of the KGB and Communist Russia?

    The Brain Trust!

Irčne Joliot-Curie, Nobel prize winner for the discovery of artificial radioactivity, fishes physicist, bon-vivant and multilingual Richard Feynman out of a topless bar for a secret mission. Their help is needed by Doc Savage, who has his hands full trying to counter the invasion of earth led by Barsoomian scientist Ras Thavas, now in possession of an awesome ninth ray bomb!

The trio is joined by Professor Calculus, whose transdimensional experiments may allow them to travel to the Red Planet and nip the invasion plan in the bud. However, an early attempt only succeeds in bringing to Earth a talking, anthropomorphic fowl: Gyro Gearloose!

The now-quintet is later on made into a sextet by the arrival of Maureen Johnson Smith Long, another multiversal traveler.

Will they reach Mars in time to stop Ras Thavas who in the meantime has been joined by Emperor Wang the Perverted ???
