So, point for Batman: has money so other people can do things for him.
Point against Spider-man: Actually has a personality.
ITEM #1- Everytime a super-hero comes to Gotham City, they cause millions of dollars of property damage and put even more people at risk--then expect a pat on the back for saving the same lives which they helped place in jeopardy. This tends to happen a lot in SPIDER-MAN. Just ask BOTH of the Stacys!

ITEM #2- Money does help, but Bruce Wayne also trained his body to physical perfection, excelled in school, and organized his Wayne Enterprises and the Foundation so he wouldn't HAVE to micromanage--plus he has a tremendous amount of compassion--especially for the underdog! Parker has compassion, too, but he is so screwed up emotionally he is constantly hamstrung by self-doubt, making him far less effective overall--and he's loaded up the butt with super-powers!

ITEM #3- "Point against Spider-man: Actually has a personality." So does his "twin" Archie Andrews--your point being...?

I'm not going to say I never liked Spider-Man, obviously I did or else I wouldn't check out his threads to see what's going on with him. But NEVER did I ever feel his comic or his series was BETTER than The Batman's. At times he has had great writing and artwork but overall, I found Batman to be more entertaining because as I said in my lengthy post (assuming anyone read it) what I was most interested in was the fact that Spidey's series had volition, there was an energy to it based solely on the fact that it was written like a soap opera, one that at its best--wasn't due to which fembot was thinking about dumping Peter that month-- plus, depending on the writer, it was very funny at times; that's something Quesada and company just don't get and probably never will.

On the other hand, I find Batman himself to be very inspirational in terms of being the best person I can be, through good times and bad, through health and sickness and to never look down on someone unless I'm trying to help them up, and most valuable of all, to not be impressed with so much of the phony-baloney which exists in our society: like fawning over celebrities, sports figures and the like or dubious "heroes" like Rambo or The Punisher.

Some writers try to write a psychopathic Batman and trust me, that's an issue that's hotly debated in the Batman threads but that is NOT who he has been in the majority of his publishing history. But Spidey, sadly, has been depicted TOO MANY times like a whiney sad sack!

AUNT MAY (to Peter):"You've got to have more gumption! We Parkers are tougher than you think!"

Peter STILL hasn't gotten that message!

I tend to go back and forth on this.

Suffice to say I think they're probably tied for the greatest superhero of all time.

Spider-Man is the greatest 'continuing narrative' while Batman tends to excel in the individual stories or arcs.

I think Batman appeals to the worst in us. Spider-Man appeals to the best in us.

I liked Batman a lot more as a kid. I find that the older I get, the less the adolescent power fantasy really resonates with me.
His memory's gone! Or...is it? It's not hard to fake amnesia! The Goblin is capable of anything!

Batman inspires, and is not careless, which is a flaw in Spider-Man. Spider-Man gets careless alot and has alot of collateral damage.

You know what? I think you've summed it up the best! Although I would say Spidey USED to have the best "continuing narrative".

It depends on who's writing each book. Right now, I would take Snyder's batman over Slott's spider-man.

Snyder, whose American Vampire and Severed I adore, is the only reason I buy Batman right now, but I didn't think Court of Owls was very good. I bought Morrison's Batman, too, out of some strange obligation, but he's broken that hold on me with the turd that is Action Comics.
