Wizard's Top Ten Spiderman Villain List

This is Wizard's top ten Spiderman foe list:
10. Scorpian-He was made to be Spidey's superior

9. Mysterio-Nobody messed with Spiderman's mind like Mysterio

8. Electro-One of Spiderman's most powerful enemies

7. Carnage-He was Venom times two

6. Lizard-This thing was almost beyond Spiderman's physical abilities

5. Sandman-It is almost impossible to actually harm him

4. Hobgoblin-Only caught once, messed with Spiderman badly, physically equal to Spiderman, and has many weapons

3. Dr. Octopus-Where do I begin?

2. Venom-The ultimate nega Spiderman

1. Green Goblin-Physically equal to Spiderman, skilled, intelligent, incredible arsenal, and no one has messed with Peter like the original Goblin.
Any thoughts?

I must disagree ....if only to say Kraven messed with Spidey's mind more than Mysterio in one arc .....Kraven's Last Stand .

1-4 are about right if you switch Doc Ock and Venom. Also, i think mysterio used to be much more effective than kraven. Kraven had one time where he got the best of spidey. Mysterio almost drove spidey mad for like a whole week.

What are the criteria? Sandman's powerful, but he's not an effective Spider-man villain for two reasons: (A) there was something like nine or ten years between his first appearance in Amazing Spider-man and his next, and (B) he spent a goodly part of his career as a hero. I'm sure he's had almost as many appearances as a Fantastic Four villain as a Spidey foe.

And Carnage is a horrible idea poorly executed. Sure he's physically powerful, but he doesn't fit in with the themactic core of Spider-man in the slightest.

I'd ditch those two for Kraven and JJJ/Spider-Slayer, or maybe the Vulture. or Stegron

I'd drop Carnage down to either the number 9 or the number 10 spot. He's pretty cool, but he hasn't had a real powerful storyline yet.

Dr. Octopus should rank above Venom and possibly above Green Golbin.

Lizard should be a few places lower.

I'd repalce Scorpion with Kraven.

The list looks decent to me, although I might quibble about the order here and there.

The only subtraction I'd make would be Carnage. I'd replace him with Kraven.

Kraven is not on that list because they said he's dead so he doesn't count.

What strikes me most about the list is how little the second 5 villains on list have been used over past 10 years or so......and when they have been used, it has been in poorly scripted stories.

I think it's a fairly strong greatest Spider-Man villains list. My chief objection is Carnage, not because he's a bad villain, but because he's rarely been in good stories. I doubt he's even been in any of my Top 50 Spider-Man stories (I'm actually working on a list.) And many villains have been in better stories from personal favorite Fusion (Peter Parker Spider-Man),

Mysterio, Electro, and Sandman are all villains with original powers. Curiously Sandman was never in the 90's animated Spider-Man show, and Electro didn't appear until the last season. The Lizard's my favorite Spider-Man villain, so I'm happy to see him on the list.

It's interesting to note that Hobgoblin, and Carnage hadn't appeared in 616 Spider-Man comics for a few years when the list came out (Hobgoblin last appeared before the relaunch, and Carnage appeared in Webspinners #14. He'd later briefly appear, and die in New Avengers #2.)

Sandman appeared in Amazing Spider-MAn #4, 17-18 & Annual 1 (the last 2 within a few months of each other.) While it's true he was more of an F4 villain for a few years, untold tales including Untold Tales of Spider-Man #3, and Webspinners #7-9 have added more Sandman battles into Spider-Man's early days.

Jonah was a notable exception, as he's not really a supervillain per se.

That is a really good list, but I would be tempted to put Rhino in at 9 or 10.

But overall they hit the mark dead on.

Carnage is a big threat. It doesn't matter what stories he's in.

looks okay to me. Spidey has so many villains its kind of hard to rank them, other than the big three (GG, Ock, Venom)

I agree 100% with the first three. After that there are a couple issues. I think Hobgoblin and Sandman shouldn't be as high as they are and even I'm not sure Carnage should be on that list (and I'm a fan of Carnage).
I've never liked The Lizard but I respect his position. Mysterio should be higher and I agree that Kraven is probably missing a spot.
