to me a few good beginner bands are Genesis (Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a good starter album)...Yes (Fragile is another)...and then maybe easing your way into some King Crimson, then from there, the sky's the limit.Originally Posted by Will

No problem! Have fun! If you do start enjoying prog, by all means venture further. not sure if you've gotten into this stuff or not, but if you do like prog, jump into krautrock and other experimental stuff. there's a whole other musical world out there if you enjoy that type of thing. good luck!Originally Posted by Will
krautrock? Is that like Kraftwerk or..?
delete that immediately or be stoned by the hordes! :D yes, technically they are, but i'm talking more along the lines of Can, Faust, Neu!, Amon Duul, Cluster, Popol Vuh, Ash Ra Tempel, Tangerine Dream...etc...Start with Can. Ege Bamyasi is the best album, but Tago Mago and Future Days are right behind it.Originally Posted by Will
I enjoyed prog rock back in the day, especially Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Rush, Alan Parsons Project and Pink Floyd. Since my taste in music was fairly different from most people I knew, I didn't talk about it much, so I didn't know about a lot of the other prog rock bands in this thread, and I didn't consciously think of Rush as prog rock even though it makes sense now.
Am I the first to mention Alan Parsons Project in this thread? They seem to fit the prog rock label well: synthesizers, elaborate compositions, concept albums, and a fascination with science fiction or fantasy themes.
Punchy, it's funny that you mentioned Mahavishnu Orchestra, because the only other person I've met that likes them is also from Indianapolis. At the same time he was really into them, he was also into Weather Report and the Dixie Dregs.

I'd chalk that up to a funny coincidence. I've never heard the Dixie Dregs before ...Originally Posted by Shellhead
I figured that, but since you had other common tastes, I thought that I would mention them. My friend went through this lengthy phase where all he talked about was Mahavishnu Orchestra, the Dixie Dregs, Weather Report and a couple of other bands that I've since forgotten about. I listened to some Mahavishnu Orchestra and Dixie Dregs, but that was a long time ago. I remember that their compositions were complex and interesting, but lacking in the pop hooks that I enjoyed at the time.Originally Posted by Punchy
I just did a google search for Dixie Dregs and got 75,000 hits. Wow. Apparently they are a southern prog rock band with jazz and bluegrass influences. I'm going to look into them.

Steve Morse was in Dixie Dregs. they really had a strange blend of stuff going on.
Only song of theirs I've ever heard was "Crank It Up", which is about as far from prog as you can get.Originally Posted by MicBK

So is prog dead, or what?
All these bands are, like, old.
