I want to start reading some X-men back issues so:

If you want to buy in trades, pick up some of Grant Morrison's New X-Men trades. The original Age of Apocalypse storyline is coming out in collected volumns over the next month or so and it is also a very good take on the characters when they are placed in an alternate reality.
If you want to go further back, try picking up some of Chris Claremont's Essential X-Men works. If you like color in your comics, go and find some Classic X-Men issues in your comic store's quarter bin. They start right from Claremont's first issue through some of the best stories ever written involving the X-Men.
As for current titles, Joss Whedon is doing a great job just telling a straight up super hero story involving the X-Men. He provides any background information you need in the issues themselves, and the artwork is just spectacular. If you end up liking the style that Claremont has in the older comics he writes, then you will also enjoy his current runs on Uncanny X-Men and Excalibur. Peter Mulligan just starting his run on X-Men, and the jury is still out on his run.
Going through your stores cheap boxes and finding old X-Men comics is probably the cheapest way to find out what type of X-stories you would be interested in. Try a variety, because it will cost you less than five bucks probably to find a good mix and pick something up that you will enjoy.http://blogojett.blogspot.com/

Pick up Essential X-men. As many volumes as you can. You can easily get caught up to speed.
Go to www.uncannyxmen.net . There, you can learn anything about X-men you might ever want to know. Major titles to check out are X-men, Uncanny X-men, New Mutants, X-Man, Cable, GenerationX, Excalibur, X-Factor, and X-Force. These are all major ones.
Once again, go to uncannyxmen.net . You can also look at the current title information and choose what titles you want to read.

and the invasion arc from x-treme. Although ill be the first to say for some reason i seem to be the only one that likes that arc.
At least i think these are my answers. Its hard to pick as i forget some stories sometimes.

Schism was XXM 19-24 i think
Riot at xaviers was.... maybe 134 to 140.. somewhere in there
the first arc for new was 114-116
invasion was....i think xxm 11-18
age of appocy was all minis
Again if i think about it more i might be able to pin those numbers down as i dont have any of those comics ,being at college
Plus im sure i would change some of my answers

it has nice stories and imo it's best pick 4 newbees

What issues did grant morrison write from the new x-men run? I love his seven soliders so I might like his x-men.

The thing I noticed with the Essential Volumes of X-men, it's easy to see thier is a slight but increasing decrease in quality, right after DOFP, apart from a few highlights, the X-men really get bad after that point.
