A decent actor. That should help.

Playing a classic SHIELD character. This makes me happy!

Hm ... could there be plans for Paxton to appear in a future Marvel movie? From the description, I wonder if Garrett is going to take on a bit of Marvel comics' Fury cold war, paranoid characteristics.

Whatever it takes to make this show better. It's still running right under the level of "good".

The only guy to be killed by a Predator, an Alien, and a Terminator. Mr. "Game over, Man"! And I think he was in Titanic.

edit: Just reread your post. It sounds like you don't know the character Paxton is playing instead of Paxton himself. John Garrett is a cyborg SHIELD agent. His most notable appearance is from the Elektra mini-series published back in the 80's.

He is playing, from the comics, a SHIELD agent that was controlled by Elektra, and was a cyborg from the EXTECHop division of SHIELD.
Pick up a copy of ELEKTRA: Assassin. That is the only thing you need to read with the character.

You guys might want to rethink this Elektra: Assassin talk. Garrett had a huge role in Secret Warriors.

Probably better from a character development standpoint.

The Garrett character in Elektra: Assassin was the best version, though. Miller created this tough guy screw-up that was repulsive AND endearing at the same time. Plus, it was refreshing to see SHIELD through the eyes of someone that wasn't a gung-ho, patriotic Nick Fury type.
The guy in Secret Warriors just read very generic.

Somebody should probably inform the people in charge of this thing that Shield is not the military.

Where did the showrunners say that SHIELD was military?

Before I saw that he's based on an existing character, from the description it sounded like he was being modeled after Nick Fury...just in a more "actor-who's-more-affordable-for-network-TV" standpoint. I suppose the description also applies to just about any "street level" comic book figure from the 80s.
