Interesting that they've decided to make Iris African-American.

Not sure I like Barry's background of his father going to prison on the murder of his mother. Sounds like a bit much.

thats straight out of comic book canon though

That has been Barry's cannon origin since Flash: Rebirth. Plus, Barry investigating unexplained crimes in the search to catch his mother's killer and free his father makes a good hook for a tv series.

As for the Iris changes and the addition of Detective West, I like. I love Barry's relationship with Captain Frye, his foster father in the new 52 series, so I am glad they are including a strong relationship with a foster parent in the show. Plus, Barry having a strong family setting despite his earlier tragedies helps keep the character light and positive. Iris as a psychology major is good, since she will probably end up profiling Barry's Rogues, and there are too many reporter girlfriends on comic books anyways. Changing her race is a good idea too, since there needs to be some racial diversity in Barry's cast (Forrester is way too minor a character to count, and Linda I associate with Wally way more than Barry). Plus, that means Wally West will most likely also be black, and TV and movies need more black superheros (only one I can think of in the last 5 years is Aqualad, and I guess Rocket in YJ but she was in like 3 episodes). Plus, Barry already had mixed race grandchild (XS).

The only complaint I have with this is that it seems a little strange to have a crush on your foster sister, even if there is no relation in blood or marriage.

Well I think they're going around this pretty well actually.

Flash: Rebirth is only a few years old, and that was a retcon that wasn't received particularly well, IIRC.

Damn, I didn't even make the connection between her being a psych major and possibly profiling most of Flash's Rogues down the line. Good catch there. I'm a little unsure about the whole crushing on his foster sister thing, especially since I think he said in the Arrow episode that his mom died when he was eleven, so that's seven years of being raised with her.....but really there are plenty of ways to make that dynamic work and not be weird so its all about the execution. We'll see.

In the comics Wally Iris's nephew by way of being her brother's son, right? Hmm, they don't mention a brother here, but if they do bring Wally into the show down the line and keep that the same, this dynamic would connect Barry to Wally a lot more directly than even in the comics, which could be interesting. But I wouldn't be surprised if they don't even know if they'll be using Wally yet at this point.

Smells fake. Love interest=childhood friend. Love interest has detective father. That's just duplicating the characters from Arrow.

Personally, I'm waiting on them to start looking for a Patty for him. Nothing against Iris but I love the current relationship between Barry and Patty. And besides, its the CW. There has to be a love triangle.

They're probably going with Party as the love interest, with Barry and Iris being foster siblings and all.

As much as I love the race change, I'm bummed for Wally no longer being a ginger.

I love gingers. (just look at my avy! )

And also their description terribly looks like a rehash of Arrow. (Dedective Lance/ Dedective West, girl being childhood romance and a close family friend) The last thing I want is Iris to be unlikable like Dinah in Arrow. I hope they keep Iris' sweet charm.

I get the reasons for the change. Still, no idea if Wally will ever be involved in this show, but I guess if he is he won't be a ginger if he is. That's a bit disappointing.

Still could happen. Red hair isn't uncommon among people of African decent.

And so we get a black Wally West? That's great!
