When I read this I got a mental picture of him vibrating the iron in his blood to keep him warm, but if the real reason is even more hilarious & badass I'd love to hear it.
It was some crap with Kitty Pryde trying to phase ice into him and him scrambling it away on a molecular level or some bemusing nonsense that isn't even pretending to have anything to do with magnetism anymore. He straight up "dispersed the ice into hydrogen and oxygen" while it was in the process of solidifying in his chest no less, then straight up used it to shock Kitty out via let's just call it magic already.

As good an explanation for Erik's powers as anything else, really.

Proteus was reality warping on Muir Island. The X-Men were toast. Mags shut it down and explained that, well, it's all energy, and that's why he can bitch-slap a badass reality warper. So there.

I await the day Magneto turns the X-men into trees and when asked how he did that he just screams "Magnets!"
    "Until all are one."

Ice is made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms sharing valence bonds. Co-valent. Basically, that means that it holds together based on sharing electrons. While a person having magnetic super-powers is not excatly scientifically accurate, using them to dissolve covalent bonds is certainly far closer to real science than manipulating gravity or magnetic shields.

In other words, its a more realistic use of Magnetos power than we normally see.

Iceman has another problem in this matchup: The colder it gets, the better magnetism works. If he drops the temperature far enough, he could make Magneto superconducting:)
