Default My mother asked to borrow $12,000 today.

She wants the money for a lap band surgery. She asked me because my dad refuses to let her have the surgery. My Dad refused because she does absolutely nothing but sit on her ass and eats all day. She acts like the surgery will be a cure all for her dietary ills.

He's afraid that, even though she will only be able to eat tiny amounts of food, that it would all be sweets. And, her sugar (she's diabetic) is already on a daily roller coaster ride as it is.

Her eyesight is going, her feet are in not so good shape, and she's cold (especially her hands) ALL THE TIME. Not to mention she spends so much time in the bathroom, he's thinking of installing a mailbox in there or an intercom at the very least.

I obviously told her no about borrowing the money. Then, I griped her out a bit about even putting me in that position, especialy having to tell her no (knowing it was desperation that made her even ask), but also because I don't trust those surgeries.

When my Dad found out she asked us for the money he said "Son, I don't know whether to laugh, cry, or put my foot up her ass."

This sig was put in simply so my posts would be bigger in size and not so easily overlooked. I fear being ignored.

    Good for you Gamma!

Sigh. I hate lap band on principle. There's a whole bunch of doctors here in NY pushing it REALLY hard for anyone who's more than ten pounds overwieght.

Deit? Excercise? NAH! We'll just cut you open!

I applaud the decision. I just think you need to try and get your mom Into joining a Gym of some kind. It may help her better as you can argue than a risky 12 grand surgery!

What is this lap band surgery? Does it involve folding the stomach?

You did the right thing. Hell, around here, docs wouldn't even *do* that surgery on her, given the many behavioral and physical warning signs that indicate she's a high-risk person for that procedure.

In essence, they open you up, and tie you stomach off.

guhhh...I'd rather just eat and exercise. Seems a helluva lot less expensive and painful and much healthier. Good decision, gamma. If she wants to spend money to help her lose weight I'm sure there are more positive alternatives.

If you want to help your mother, and if she's serious about taking care of herself, take her to see a doctor right away. If she doesn't have medical insurance, you can help pay for it. She sounds like she might have diabetes--being overweight, out of shape, bathroom all the time, and with her hands being cold all the time, because of poor blood circulation, in worse case scenario, her hands could get amputated. Then you can help her out with practical weight loss/exercise program and she'll need counseling to "de-program" whatever thought process is running in her head to have lead her to her condition in the first place.

Psst. JT, re-read the initial post. She is diabetic.

That said, yeah, get her to a doctor ASAP. Also a mental health professional.

So it's not even that he/they don't have the money, right? It's just that he sees it as wasteful and risky? And so she makes an end-run around him and comes to you? Man, my 3-year-old knows better than to try to pull that crap.

Would your Dad be willing to put up some money for a nutrionist or a treadmill or Weight Watchers or something like that?

Good call not loaning the money, Gamma, and for telling her that wasn't okay for her to ask in the first place.
