After years of wanting to try out this early piece from Mignola I finally tracked down all four issues at a reasonable rate, and I have to say that I was very surprised. Don't get me wrong, nothing about it was bad persay, the line work was crisp and I loved the unique characteristics that each animal had but I have to say that if it didn't say penciled by Mike Mignola I never would have guessed it was by him in a trillion years. Maybe it was the thin inking, bright colors and lack of shadow but there was nothing there that was distinctly Mignola, which is strange as in other early appearances such as Superman Annual and World of Krypton there were definite characteristics about the work that really said Mike Mignola so it was shocking to see none of that present here.
Anyone know if this was by design? Some rule by Marvel about keeping the house style?
1985 Rocket Raccoon #1
1988 Superman #18
It's only three years but I think the differences are very clear.
