I come to this forum a seeker, for my mind is plagued by the loss of knowledge I now wish to retrieve.
Years ago while in high school, boxes of old comics were handed out to the class for those interested to read something. One of the comics I picked up was a very old one with a Conan-like hero. Yet I cannot for the life of me remember what the name of the comic was, which was also the name of the hero. This was the first comic, and I hoped that by telling the origin story of the hero someone might recognize who I speak of. It was certainly an independent comic publisher and not one of DC's own characters.
The story begins in a sun baked human village in what appears to be a medieval dessert dwelling society. Suddenly, the peace in the market place is broken by a woman yelling
“Ahh, mutants are attacking!”
She is pointing to a charging horde of mounted warriors who bear great resemblance to modern interpretations of orcs (Warcraft orcs, not the Warhammer ones mind you). The marauders are quick to dispatch all resistance and begin looting the village. We look upon their chieftain, an old and dangerous fighter who is seen killing a human warrior (assumedly the main character’s father) before proceeding into the man’s dwelling. As he surveys the house he hears the crying of a baby from the corner. Suddenly, the boy’s mother springs from hiding to try and attack the chieftain only to be easily killed by the mutant.
The chieftain looks into the baby’s eyes, and rather than abandon or kill him decides to take him back to his village. Swaddling the babe in his arms, he resolves to name the child after his people’s term for “battle prize” – a name that eludes me and yet this is all I remember of it.
Years later, the boy has been raised as a member of the tribe and considers the chieftain his father. He has grown into a strong young man, and on this day the tribe is holding tournaments for the youths of the village to participate in. Meanwhile, an armored human warrior looks upon the village from afar. A confederate reports that the mutants are distracted by revelry, and their leader decrees it is time to strike. A large number of mounted warriors, akin to barbaric knights, descend upon the village in a recreation of the earlier mutant raid on the human village.
The camp is soon ablaze, and the young human known as “battle prize” struggles to find his mutant father amidst the carnage. He comes upon a human warrior who tells him to join them, but after the hero refuses the warrior then labels him no better than the others and moves to strike him down. The hero prevails and kills the warrior, and then finds the chieftain mortally wounded. He is told to run, and after one last glance between the two of them the hero flees whilst his adopted father does battle with another one of the raiders.
This is where the story ended, but I am eager to understand what more might lay beyond. If anyone has an inkling of what story I speak of, I would be eager to hear him or her. This knowledge would bring me great peace of mind. This is an old comic I know for certain, the grammar was just goddamn awful (likely to fit the words in bubbles). It was black and white as well but beyond that there is nothing distinct about it that I can remember.
