IM 3 will set the benchmark for what Man of Steel needs to aim for in terms of numbers.

Damn! $950 million already?! That's awesome. I loved the movie and hope it continues with this great success.

Why is IM 3 the benchmark?

Did anyone honestly think this film would slip into the number 2 spot before Star Trek came out?

Good question. He should have named Batman Begins, which has more in common with Man of Steel in terms of film history.

IM3 should still be in the theatres when Man of steel opens. Competition is good , surely Warners will see the numbers in IM3 and hope to match that.

As the first big blockbuster of the year, it sets the tone for all of the summer superhero/sci-fi genre films.
Currently reading She-Hulk, Deadpool, Swamp Thing, Ms. Marvel

Probation: Ghost Rider, Loki: LoA, Secret Avengers

Looking forward to All-New Ultimates, Flash Gordon and Doctor Mirage.

But that won't be fair to MOS.

Iron Man is a "trequel" and is coming off one of the biggest movies of all time (The Avengers).

It's not about being fair or not , it's just a benchmark to aim for , it's not about who wins. I imagine Man of iron would certainly trump man of steel in the box office. How well MOS will do will certainly reflect on how much warner is willing to bank on the proposed JLA movie.

It's still a Superman film, and there's been about 5 of those.
