Default Are any of you close to someone with a mood disorder?

Either diagnosed or suspected. How do/did you deal?

Eh, depression, or facets of, run on my mom's side of the family. I was recently diagnosed with dysthymia, kind of a chronic, low grade depression...that can be exacerbated by stressful or traumatic events.

I have a touch of depression co-occurring with PTSD. At its worst, I just became a terrible bore to be around, because I didn't want to do anything.

I'm dealing by addressing the PTSD, getting regular counseling, taking my meds, and getting back to work. It helps that I love my job. Healing from my physical injuries (which resulted from the same incident that caused my PTSD) is also helping, as I'm increasingly able to do the things I loved before.

My brother has clinical depression. He's tried to kill himself on numerous occasions, and his moods can be very unpredictable.

It's not so bad now though since he went on antidepressants. The change has been remarkable, though he does have the odd relapse.

    Yes. Diagnosed.

    Dealing requires a few things:

    1) investigation. Take the time to research the diagnosis and the individual's own patterns and triggers. Forewarned is forearmed. Also learn what to blame on the disorder and what to blame on the individual. The distinction matters.

    2) communication. It needs to be open and honest at all times.

    3) professional help. The person with the mood disorder needs to seek a diagnosis if they don't have one. Upon obtaining it, they need to accept it and work to regulate it. A person with a mood disorder who refuses to acknowledge or seek help for it can be hell to deal with. This can be medication, counseling, or preferably both.

It's important to remember it is not their fault. The saying is "Depression is not a flaw in chemistry not character"
Like any illness, the proper medication is essential. Also therapy to understand what is going on is important as well.
And don't forget that those dealing with others mental illness also benefit from therapy and support groups.

I have my shining moments. And that's in between the time I wake up and before I have my first bottle of whiskey in the morning.
