Award-winning cartoonist Tom Batiuk tells CBR about his long-running comic strip, the benefits of working so far ahead, killing off characters and his journey from comic book letter hack to cartoonist.
kudos for sure to mr. batiuk, I read the strips a lot as a kid-- but fast-forward to today, I just don't relate to a lot of comic strips I see-- in particular the trend of strips that were gag-driven initially now becoming these (presumably) serio-comic dramas, with ongoing storylines that I always seem to arrive in the middle of, or nominal punchlines that fly way above my head (or beneath).. Not a commentary on anyone's talent, and maybe in this era of newspaper consolidations/eliminations, writing for an ultra-niche audience may align with the muse of the creatives, but the weekday and sunday funnies aren't that funny anymore to me.
