    Default REVIEW: Swamp Thing, #18

"Swamp Thing" #18 ends Scott Snyder's run on the title and Yanick Paquette joins in for the farewell as the Arcanes pay one last visit to their old friend/foe.

My reaction can be found HERE.

Pretty good conclusion from what I found. I think this event should have been an issue or two shorter, but at least it came this together this well. I hope this next writer will be just as good or even better.

I know this'll probably never happen, but I'd totally buy an "Arcane" series focusing on where Abby goes from here.
Life is a waste of time, time is a waste of life, so get wasted all the time and you'll have the time of your life.

You know, you aren't the first person I heard suggest that idea. And like when that person brought it up, I totally would be for it.

It was okay. Definitely not satisfying for this incredibly long storyline but I didn't have expectations.

Bitter sweet issue. I love Alec and Abby, but have to admit this was a good send off. I hope she can be used in some way in the future. To completely get rid of her would really suck.

Pretty good ending to a story act that was way too long. Glad that even Lemire admitted that it went on too long. A very emotional ending for Alec and Abby. Paquette just knocked it out of the park. Beautiful work as always.

They made it long to be sure Paquette would have enough time to draw the ST finale.

But then had a sub-par artist ruin the Rotworld finally. Well done DC.

But I liked this issue, as I say goodbye to ST and Snyder/Parquette.

I gave this and Animal Man 18 issues and I'm done. Initially, I thought these stories would be new and refreshing with talents like Snyder and Lemire. And the first arcs did not disappoint. I found Swampy a little vanilla; however, Paquette made up for the simple story and dialogue. These stories were a tedious, slow build that never reached a climatic point for me. There was no sense of dread or trepidation. In fact, the Rotworld arc was very poorly done. It was essentially a what if story; an alternate timeline that was equal parts ridiculous and bland. If there had been some point other than to drag the arc out longer, I would've given these books a higher mark. But I came out of that arc having felt I wasted my money because it didn't add anything to the story value. All in all, I find this arc -- from 1-18 -- to be a 3/10. I didn't end up connecting with the characters because the characters regressed from issue number 1. I went in with high hopes, but came out just meh. Meh isn't good enough for an 18 issue arc.

I liked #18, but the past few issues haven't been very good. It's amazing what a difference Paquette makes. Not just his great art but it seems like the writing is better (more focused) too when he's on art duties. The art to #17 was, to me, ugly and the writing repetitive to the point that I began skipping the dialogue of the Rot characters.

I've learned to avoid writer Scott Snyder in the future. He seems to just love and adore long epics, but they never go anywhere under his pen. They always seem to simply have a loooooooooong build-up with a fizzling fast finish that leaves one totally unsatisfied.
    Pull list:
Adv. Time, Avengers AI, Batgirl, Batman '66, B & R, BOP, E 2, Fearless Defenders, He-Man, JL: Dark, Katana, Shadowman, Swamp Thing, The Ultimates, Ult. Spider-Man

I completely agree, the art on issue 17 was an insult to the readers.

But ish 18 almost made me forget about it, its so gorgeous to look at and beautifully written and I will say its one of my favorite single issues in a long time.

Iif Rotworld had been say 2 or 3 issues shorter with this ending and we would have gotten consistent art and a tighter narrative this would have been a run to hold near and dear. As it stands its just above average IMO.
