    Default REVIEW: Animal Man, #18

"Animal Man" #18 lets Jeff Lemire and Steve Pugh wrap up their half of "Rotworld," and while a lot is predictable, there are both big and little surprises ferreted away that make it a strong conclusion.

    My reaction found HERE.

It wasn't as good as Swamp Thing's finale, but this one to me had better moments I found. Maxine punching that kid through the barn and breaking down the remaining Hunters, the interesting hint that may lead back to Black Orchid, and Buddy Baker busting down that door. Just wonderful, but also depressing with that ending.

    **SPOILER ALERT**

Really enjoyed another reading another DC comic involving a child being murdered. That's, what? 2 in as many weeks from DC?

Awesome, can't wait til next week. Cuz, really, that's why we all buy comics, right? To read about children being killed.

Keep up the great work, DC.

I personally found Cliff's death to be a cop-out. The best thing about Animal Man historically is that it's an incredibly powerful guy who does his best, through fate and work, to balance a family life and a hero life. Maxine has shown power for a long time -- so she was the child with power, but I always thought CLIFF was the more interesting character because he was not "special" and did not have power. Just a kid with a very powerful Dad and a sister who also has powers. Imagine the jealousy. Imagine the feelings of inadequacy. Cliff was a normal kid, with a normal mom, who rebelled at times and other times tried to do the best he could with what life gave him. Killing him always seemed the obvious thing -- normal child playing the victim, with grieving mother turning against her husband because he "brought this on them." (sigh). Nothing original about that. I see this leading to one of three options: 1) Cliff stays dead and that is always the source of grief; 2) Cliff and Maxine head out into the Red and try to reclaim his soul and bring him back -- that's OK; 3) the Rot (or something else) takes Cliff on as its own, and Cliff becomes a major baddy and pain in Animal Man's life. #3 is what I would guess is the likely scenario, and again, NOT ORIGINAL. Cliff deserves better, more original treatment than that. I hope #2 is the option, because otherwise, I'll just not be excited to purchase this book anymore.

I'm curious if I'm the only one that felt that Cliff's death was far too predictable?
