    Default REVIEW: Hawkeye, #8

The mysterious redhead returns in Matt Fraction and David Aja's "Hawkeye" #8, causing all sorts of problems for our hero, both personally and professionally.

I don't really see how "acknowledging other comics exist" is stumbling. Why is it so hard to believe that comic books exist within the Marvel universe? It doesn't really invalidate anything and all of the comics referenced were 50s style romance/crime/pulp comics, not super hero stuff.

I do understand the criticism of dealing with Clint cheating on Jessica, but the truth of the matter is, Clint can be kind of a dick. He means well, but especially in love he's scared and does stupid things. Much like an actual, believable, human being. While I want a tad more exposition on the situation, I'm glad Fraction addressed it, though I can see why others wouldn't like it. Plus I'm glad he established that this series is within continuity, because it proves you can do a cool and brilliant series without bogging yourself down with too much continuity.

I think they mean Hawkguy being its own deal, outside of other titles.
I know Kevin Nichols through a guy that knows a gal. Small world!

If nihilism didn't take some delight in destruction one might suspect nihilists were an unnaturally morbid sort.

Great review Kelly. The last paragraph is so true.

Yeah, spot on. This is probably the first issue where it helps to know something more than what the issue reveals. Hawkeye has so far managed to pull off an amazin trick...it is a book totally unhampered by the larger MU continuity, and yet it does not contradict any continuity at all.

I think this was the forst glimpse of continuity peeking in. But it was such a small thing, and was handled so deftly that It really isn't that big a deal.

    Another great issue.

This was a fun read! Miles ahead of last issue. The complete opposite of his Fantastic Four's Valentine issue.

I agree with the above review that addressing all Hawkeye's (will not say Hawkguy... D'OH) girls in the mix was welcome but at the same time establishing this title to be in concurrent continuity feels terribly problematic. Speaking of problems, that gag on the credits page was funny once but also insulting in a way - boastfully wasting a whole page on just credits when they can be and are easily repeated on the next page.

Black Widow in black on page 4 looked awesome. Cheaters Poker, ha! "My friend. Girl?", ha! The cover splashes by Wu were topically lovely and hopefully they prove to accurately mirror Penny's life rather than be just wasteful random images to show you a combination number in the corner.

The dialogue was fast - and puts the "real" in real fun. Even though Kate only got only 2 panels, her lines were great character moments. I appreciate some of the quirky experimenting this title does with word balloons but trying to read that untranslated BoNBAHbI word was a bit of a nuissance.

The action and panel choreography was wonderful. And the signature CRAZY color scheming was more overlookable because of it.

Heh, surely Clint recalls that Pym was fired! And since this title is officially in continuity NOW, next issue better deal with the reprecussions of getting arrested to my satisfaction thay he will logically still be kept on the team so he can appear as not-a-leader on the Secret Avengers.

Penny was interesting and earned that perfect cover. The Kingpin's line-up on the other hand was far less believable and screamed gimmicky shock. The various handbook villains offered only generic interchangable comments for the contract put out on Barton. What is 9 and 6 or 8 and 7 that Fisk said? Does the Tracksuit Godfather have a name yet? Maybe "Bro-Master"? :)

this was the first issue of Hawkeye that didn't really blow me away.

Sure, it was GOOD, but I didn't totally rock my socks like previous issues. Great art, obviously, but I think the main culprit is that I just don't find Penny to be a very interesting or engaging character. At all. The one page where Kate showed up was like a giant gasp of fresh air by comparison.

Though I didn't think this issue was as fun as the others, I still enjoyed it. The comic 'knowing other comics' criticism is a good one, but I think the only thing that really needs to be known is explained in the little captions for the girls in Clint's life.

Honestly, I can't really articulate why I didn't like it as much as the others. Maybe I just did not like the plot, but that's such a shallow criticism that I have to discount it.

Reviewing is a lot like paleontology: the evidence is there, but no one seems to agree on it.
