I can appreciate the work that went into the layout, but it looks like something out of an indie comic - the really low-end kind. Guess I just don't dig the minimalist style.

It does have a bit of an indie feel to it, doesn't it? That's why I like it so much lol.

But really though I do really like the feel of the art here.

Yep. Different strokes and all that jazz. I'm not feeling it at all, but I can see how it appeals to other sensibilities, as it is an admittedly well crafted piece of art.

I would kill to get an artist like Rivera on a Superman comic. His style is so classic, so bright and fun. An artist like him can allow a dark story be dark, but not oppressive. I mean, you just have to look at his run on Daredevil.

DC, are you listening? Do something right and get him on board!
    Thanks,

Yeah, you're not alone there. Love the layout and the idea behind it, the art itself is just not my personal taste is all.

    Is the cover really minimalist?

It doesn't fit the definition of minimalist style art but I got the general gist of the comment. The piece is not overtly crosshatched or with finicky lines nor does have all these unecessary details. It does have a nice indy feel as others have mentioned plus Kal has the classic Shuster-esque face. The only thing that bothers me is a high forehead look. i feel as if Rivera drew the spit-curl and it was edited out (could be just me). Anyhow, nice layot/composition and execution by Rivera. He keeps it innovative and fresh just like most of his coverwork. Kudos!

The art is supposed to be throw back to Golden Age Supes. Heres an image, he could probably even referenced it

And the actual cover. Which I actually really like, except the costume. Even the poses are a nod to the old artists.

The costume just doesn't really lend itself to a minimalistic look. I think that's why it looks off here. You can't essentially just have it be the classic costume and put some lines in it as far the blue is concerned. I mean, you can, but the end result to me isn't optimal. It needs some element of texture, or shine to it. That's just my personal take.

I'd make the argument though that this is the single best image of Vyndktvx in the entire run.
