Default Batwoman 17 Preview / Discussion (Spoilers)

I dropped this title a while ago. Second arc killed my interest, and by the time JH came back, it was just sort of an "I know this will probably be good but I don't care anymore and don't want to spend money if I don't care anymore" type thing. But...GUH...look at that art. Dear god that is gorgeous. Let us bask in the glory.

Tip of the hat to Gotham Spoilers for the find.

Also if people could let me know if the story has really improved after the second arc finished, I'd be interested to know, thanks.

As usual its lovely and Batwoman rocks again. But I will have to get used to Bette's new codename. I really don't like it, at the moment.

There is no reasons she should not have stayed Flamebird.

Flamebird eeerrr... Hawkfire just shooting fire out of her hands was awesome!

"The part of my brain that still works kicks in, luckily, it's the part that memorizes license plates." Too good.

The story has REALLY improved after the second arc finished. Wonder Woman and Batwoman make an awesome pair. The art is to die for. All hell is breaking loose and major threads from the start are being concluded.

Thank you so much for this. I can't wait!

I think the second arc suffered from having a creative team that did not work well together. The shifting time and bouncing around the cast was an ambitious project, but it often enough didn't get synched enough to have the necessary drive or resonance. I suspect not having the time to rewrite/redraw things contributed to that.

That looks decent so I'm in.

I'm with you about the second arc, El Sombrero. I was ready to drop Batwoman completely at the time if the writer had continued with that particular writing style LostinFandom mentioned but thankfully it didn't stay that way at all. I've been enjoying this arc a lot better than even the first arc. I would recommend it myself but that's just me.

I re-read the preview, especially page 2 with "Bette". I suppose she could be just calling her flame machine/ability, 'Hawkfire' (it took the form of a bird, ummmm?).

I really want her name to stay Flamebird, but I imagine the PTB don't because it means someone like me will always want her bookended with Nightwing. Sigh, forever alone, Hawkfire?

Well, the writing continues to look good. I agree with others that this team up sure has hit the writers' sweet spot. The art is still what it is, the Williams fans will find it breathtaking. I hope that the whole book is not like that. But I am really looking forward to this conclusion. I think they have set this up well.

If I start drooling, will anyone be offend?

Okay, so maybe this week's Batman epic conclusion wasn't for you. Surly, THIS would be the kind of epic conclusion to a big story arc you guys could all be happy with, right?

    ... right?

This arc has been great, and that artwork is just beautiful. I think more artists would benefit from trying to make ever page two-page spreads. I love having all the ads stuffed into the back of the book.

I'm trade waiting the book. I've switched to digital, but I'm making an exception for JH Williams III.

i think the biggest thing hurting this book is the fact that JH Williams III takes a break every 4-5 issues and the story suffers for it because we've been used to the masterpiece artwork of Williams only to have it replaced with some lower tier fill-in artist that just destroys the effect the series has on it's fans

the haunting artstyle fits with the strange and supernatural themes of the series...once it loses that it loses the readers attention because sometimes we have to deal with characters looking like cheap knock-off's or way too bright and cartoony to fit in the setting created

Trevor McCarthy rocked it with his issues, so I have faith. Plus, I think it had more to do with the story bouncing around, and the artist changes than anything. The flow just really got killed in that second arc.

I'm pretty sure there's also the fact that, regardless of her appearance, if she used Flamebird the DEO would pretty much know straight away who she was. with a new ID it'll take them all of 5 minutes, but those 5 minutes might be crucial.

also, it probably frees up the name in the event of any more kryptonians coming to earth (well, in the event that there are too many to be covered by "Super X")

So what will Dick Grayson's new codename be: Double Standard! The creators don't want to deal with the back story suggested by names and what Morrison has done.
