How fondly do you look back on the ONSLAUGHT crossover?

I remember when it first came out I thought it was the best X-related crossover I ever read.

I never got around to re-reading it from an older (and hopefully wiser) perspective, but I read on several websites that it is generally looked back on as a travesty, the event that broke the comic industry.

I was wondering why people dislike it so much nowadays. Is it because it spawned the Heroes Reborn line? Some other reason? Do any of you, like me, look back fondly upon it?

And, if any of you got a chance to revisit it a few years after it was published - does it hold up to the test of time?

I liked it when I read it first in a danish reprint series called Mega Marvel, I was ten years old and after having mostly been exposed to Spider-Man and the X-Men it was pretty cool to see teams like the Fantastic Four and Avengers so it has a special nostalgic place in my heart. Don't know how it reads now though.

I remember the ending of X-Men #54, the big reveal, left me gasping for breath... The whole thing was just super exciting and seemed to have these really serious repercussions throughout the entire Marvel U, which I loved. That's why I liked it so much.

And Onslaught wasn't very good. Most of it just seemed unnecessary.

I hated it with the moment the Avengers and the greater marvel universe were integrated. I think the best thing about this crossover was the whole building up to this event. All the hints for a year. Who or what is ONSLAUGHT? I was really excited about it. But the endredult was really lame.

I was excited for Mark Waid joining, but I didn't like it. I really disliked the Professor X reveal and also the reboot that followed zzz I only read stories that keep building on top of previous ones or are brand new.

I liked it at the time, because I read only some of the stories, and completely ignored the reveal that it was a mix of Magneto and Xavier. Way more powerful if it was only Xavier.
I don't know how it reads now, though.

I wish the Avengers were permanently banned from the Marvel universe.

It's never been reprinted as an omni while a lot of other X-Storylines have (Operation Zero Tolerance????) so it seems Marvel don't care much for it either.
