Deciding which Green Lantern/Corps trades to buy

So I know this is long winded but bear with me....

I'm a lifelong X-Men fan and comic reader. I didn't start to branch out and read other things (outside odd comics from when I was young) until I started reading New Avengers during Bendis' run in 2006 or so. Sometime in the lead up to Blackest Night I started catching up on Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps and I loved them. I have followed each of the titles up until War of the Green Lanterns where I dropped GLC and EW/NG and never started Red Lanterns. Since that fateful run I've branched out and have started reading a number of DC titles including Batman/Detective/B+R/Inc/Nightwing and now Justice League and soon to be JLA.

Hearing Johns was leaving made me sad because it was his run and hearing about it on podcasts that really opened my eyes to DC Comics in this century at all. I know I want to get his entire run in Trade (except for the bit between Wanted and Sinestro Corps because I can't find that anywhere). However, I'm not looking to blow the life savings. It's been years since I read them from the beginning, how pertinent is the GLC story to the main arch Johns does? I remember really liking Tomasi's stories and I like him on B+R now but I don't know if I can shell out for all of those trades.

I was content to leave them to the side but upon hearing the rumor that Tomasi/Gleason may actually be taking the reigns from Johns on GL made me start to wonder. Budgeting is a tricky thing and I was debating even continuing to read GL and I'm turned all kinds of ways....

TL;DR: Wants to collect Geoff John's run in TPB in its entirety, wonders if story will flow from beginning to end if GLC is not included as well. OP not made of $$$.

That's the best I could come up with. If stronger fans suggest I add
any particular GL spin-off book or companion trade, let me know.

It's the fall of Hal Jordan as the Green Lantern and started him on a journey to being Parallax and The Spectre.
