If Cyclops would be lame, nobody would care about him, like it is the case with C-Listers like Strong Guy f.E.
People can hate Cyclops, but this shows that the character is wrell written.
You are missing the prime Avengers fan rule, Torture and Genocide are OK if Cap approves, Feeding the Starving is evil if Cap doesn't aprove.

You're right, but I don't think he was always well written.

Cyclops and Wolverine are probably the most polarizing X-characters and you can see by the threads that they are always on the spotlight.

Cyclops has been a character to watch during the span from New X-Men to All-New X-Men, but let's not forget the fallow stretches before that when Scott's stiffness accentuated the emotional eccentricity of just about everyone else, or the more recent moments when his brand of relentless mutant realpolitik has overshadowed any sense of inner life. He's a tricky character to write...and that has in the not-too-distant past translated into long stretches of relative lameness. He's a much richer character when his single-mindedness is at odds with the characters around him (instead of making him a mouthpiece for an unproblematic set of values).

At a certain point, it's not a "joke" anymore -- it's an insult.
Agree. Use to be a nasty stereotype, now it's considered an "in-joke". Kind of like trolling, it's only funny if you're on the side of the trolls. When you're on the side of the trolling, it's not actually that funny.

I think Cyclops is more unlikable as a person than actually lame.

Cyclops works better as a plot device to motivate the actions of others than as a character to root for. Put him in a straight-up, him solo verses any bad guy situation and I would rather watch almost any X-Man in his place.

There's nothing wrong with disliking Cyclops in itself. There are plenty of valid reasons to do so. It's just that many of the casual fans dislike him based on false notions (e.g. Wolverine-fans who've never seen Logan and Scott as anything but rivals or the people who think of Scott as one-dimensional boy-scout).

well yeah people like that are annoying as fuck, that much I think we can agree on. Cyke is far from being a one dimensional boy scout, but he still a shitty person. So like I said he's not useless, quite the contrary he's extremely useful because he makes for a person you can really grow to hate, and that is WAY harder to do than making a likable character

I think the impressive part is that they have managed to make Cyclops such a complex, flawed and human character that hating him and liking him are equally valid reactions.

I would say misconceptions from actual X-Men fans drive me crazy over misconceptions from casual fans.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

If they should have killed anyone from the Xmen first class film it shoulda been "angel" Absolutely lame character in both design and execution. Atleast Darwin had personality for all of the 5 mins we actually see him on screen.

Why/how is Cyclops unlikeable as a person? As it is, if I were a mutant there's no one else I'd trust more or have more faith in.

Again, why? I mean unless its the fact that his fights typically only last a panel or two due to the nature of his power. But even that can be corrected as he's a aikido master able to take down 6 able bodied men blindfolded.

I just don't get why some people hate him so much when all he does, all he's ever done is fight for what he believes to be right, which I thought was a virtue to be respected not a sin to despise.

i've noticed a trend in the world, the masses seem to gravitate towards the actual assholes, and hate the good for some reason. martyrdom. cyclops represents true good.

How is Scott unlikable? Don't get me started. The way Scott abandoned his wife and child to go chasing after Jean after she came back from the dead years ago pretty much put me off the character. Then his "psychic" affair with Emma while married to Jean. The way he distanced himself from old friends that disagreed with his direction for the X-Men and instead surrounded himself with "reformed" villains.

Terrorists also fight for what they believe is right, it's their methods most people have problems with.
