In the forums I've checked out, there seems to be no mechanism by which members can post new topics. I didn't see it expressly stated that only moderators created topics, but that's my current impression-- though I wondered if it's true of all the Goodreads forums. Anyone know?

Members can make any topic they want in any groups that is for normal members. There are some moderator forums for Librarian, Goodreads people who try improve the site.

I have made many topics in groups i was not a moderator in.

Found the mechanism; that little bitty "new" meant "new topic."

Is it weird that I always see this site's name as "goo dreads"?

This morning's news reports that Amazon has acquired Goodreads. Amazon already owns Shelfari and part of LibraryThing, two sites similar to Goodreads. Users of Goodreads are wary.

Do we have reason to be wary? Has any one used Shelfari or LibraryThing? Do they suck?

The wariness is basically because people use Goodreads to read & post reviews of books, including negative reviews, and Amazon sells books. How independent will they let Goodreads be?

Amazon's in the movie and TV business, and they've let IMDB run mostly unmolested for years. Shelfari and Library Thing haven't changed much. The point of buying Goodreads is to improve their recommendation system with a social component. It's not in their interest to make that system less effective.

As far as negative reviews go, you occasionally hear something about negative reviews disappearing on Amazon, but I don't think it's all that common. It's a rare well-reviewed book that doesn't have at least a few negatives in the mix. If anything, Amazon's problem is too many positive reviews from authors trying to game the system.
