    Default Secret Avengers, #1

Nick Spencer and Luke Ross present "Secret Avengers" #1, a story about Hawkeye and the Black Widow that could only be called "Budapest."

"well constructed" is a great way to put it. I really enjoyed this book, and while the new tech (like healing bullets) might seem silly to some I thought it was cool. It was my comic of the week for sure.

Yeah I saw some of the hate for the "Healing bullets" thing, and all I could think when reading it was that it just added to the bond-esque spy feel. I loved this book, I can understand why it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it sure as hell has be intrigued!

I LOVE the giant statue of the DWELLER IN DARKNESS from which Clint is hung.
The bad guy is a dark arts user with that statue in his pad?
    AWESOME!

I'm really glad to see the praise Nick Spencer is getting for this issue. I said it elsewhere but the hostility toward his previous stint on SA seemed really misplaced since the guy was basically asked to write three tie ins to the mess that was Fear Itself and a .1. That's not a lot to work with but those issues were perfectly serviceable as filler between Brubaker and Ellis.

Anyway, am really looking forward to seeing where Spencer takes it from here. I was planning to drop after vol. 1 wrapped up but I'm on board after this.

Healing bullets? lol. Wow. I won't let that bother me, when mine gets here tomorrow, but it does seem kinda silly. Not "unrealistic", because it is a comic, but definitely silly...

The healing factor bullets, which heal you once your heart stops pumping, are the sort of crazy-awesome-wicked thing that I wouldn't be surprised if Jason Aaron had invented them, but I like how Nick Spencer introduces them with a straight face and actually makes them a pretty cool and very spy-ish tool.

Yes, yes and more yes! It's like James Bond with all the gadgets which I thought was very cool.

I liked the way SHIELD was represented, although I really think SHIELD lacks a clear identity across books these days. Comic book Coulson still annoys me and everything about his scene with BW and H turned me off but it picked up after that and I liked the Bond references.

Great book so far, I liked the art and the writing but the thing that bugs me is Nick Fury - when did we switch to the Ultimate Nick? I'm fine with the change its just that it's a drastic change and I missed the explanation somewhere other than "we're making him consistent with the films"

I was surprised by what Nick Spencer did here, not because I expected some link to Age of Ultron, but just that it didn't seem the same as the Secret Avengers one shots in Fear Itself. I didn't expect to read a well constructed espionage network, ready made, and functioning in the first issue. If felt like Strange Tales #135. The first issue we saw of Nick Fury, DoS, back in 1965. All that was missing was the LMD, and Hydra.

But even Nick Spencer suggests that SA has a hidden mystery that will not be revealed till the very end, as he answered in one of my posts, (if I am interpreting him correctly), so no matter what we see on the page for the foreseeable future, it won't be what is really happening. This tells me that the lack of motivation and the missing scenes, all compound to trick us by the very means of his deception. It looks to me like Spencer is a magician, and he is waving hard over here, but he is slipping a hand into our pockets over there.
Visited NY and DC and saw Spider-Man Turn off the Dark.

Don't read across the entire line, but here they were shown to do what they need at any cost, like old Fury, while other times they seem to try to distance themselves from methods like that.

really you missed the whole intro of nick fury jr?

He was introduced after Fear Itself as the (bastard, and unknown) son of Nick Fury. People in the marvel universe find out his connection to nick fury and try to kill him. he loses his eye, helps stop the bad guys, and Cap gives him his "Commander Rogers" uniform. Apparently decided to use the codename "Nick Fury" as thats not his name, when he was made a SHIELD agent.
so the real, old Nick Fury hides in the shadows. the new 'nick fury' is an agent of SHIELD who actually reports to Hill.
So a little different than Ultimate version, and a little different than movie...only a little.

Actually he finds out from SHIELD that Nick Fury IS his real name IIRC
