I love Don Cheadle. He's a great actor; one of the rare actors who can be just as fantastic at comedy as he can drama. House of Lies is one of the best shows on TV, and Cheadle gets to show off all his many talents in his role.
But the man is just not James Rhodes. He just doesn't look the part, and maybe the one persona he can't bring to the table in a role is "bad ass mother fucker", at least not in the physical, I'm-in-the-military sense. When I think of Rhodes, I picture Doaks from Dexter or maybe the actor playing Diggle on Arrow right now; a big guy with physical swagger who looks like he can kick your ass, no armor needed. Cheadle actually looks smaller on screen than RDJ.
Aside from Anthony Hopkins, Cheadle is probably the best pure actor to be in a Marvel movie (till Groot, of course), but I think he was miscast as War Machine.
...at least he could grow a goatee for the part, but overall i agree (and i dig Cheadle) He brought nothing to the table in IM2 (and i wasn't super crazy about Terrance Howard's portrayal in the first one, but at least he and RDJ had better chemistry)

I don't mind the lack of comic accurate fidelity in Rhodey adopting the Iron Patriot armour. I do mind that it is an awful design that I assumed was to show the hypocrisy of Osbourn's "patriotism" being a slight parody of Captain America.
That suit looks brilliant.

it's too bad that Laurence Fishburne isn't a lot younger. i think he would have made a great Rhodey.

Don Cheadle wasn't bad in Iron Man 2. I'm glad he came back for the sequel, and I hope he shows up in future MCU movies too.
I liked Howard a bit better, but I liked Cheadle well enough in 2. He might not look badass, but his demeanor definitely made me think military.
A lot of people get sentience confused for sapience. Your hamster is sentient, you are sapient. Intelligence is sapience.
I wish that Rhodey could have his own clear cut agenda here, and some distinctly different powers from the standard Iron Man armor. I liked the Grek Pak conceit of being able to assimilate tech from outside sources and merge with his own armor. Of course, that Rhodey was a severely injured amputee... but anyway..
The problem with Rhodey in Iron Man 2 wasn't really Cheadle, it was more just the fact that Rhodey didn't really do much in the movie. Terrance Howard wouldn't have done that role much better.
I'm kind of torn on which Rhodey I like more. Howard and Downey Jr had better on screen chemistry, but Howard made a very unconvincing career military guy while Cheadle looks more like a guy who'd be in that kind of role. Overall I'd take Cheadle by factor of him being an overall better actor (and being the best Captain Planet)
Also - I wonder if they're going to explain why Rhodey didn't show up during the attack on New York. (I can think of reasons why, I'm just wondering if they'll address it)
Eh, Comics is a pretty cool guy...
Its an easy explanation. They were right in the midst of refitting the armor and beefing up software security so someone cannot take control of it again, so the armor wasn't battle ready during the relatively short fight.

I saw the Iron Patriot figurine last night at target and my first thought was Captain America in battle armor.
