They're barely the same characters. Which is ok regardind some elements, but terrible regarding most. Engineer was never a cyborg, nor the result of an accident, nor cynical. Apolo was never insecure about anything, Hawksmoor was never a background character and Midnighter... poor Midnighter...

Yeah, I guess it's sort of odd that I can accept varying versions of characters like Batman and Superman, but when it comes to these characters, I can't get passed how much better they were in the WildStorm Universe, and under Ellis' pen.
DC: Batman Inc - Batman & Robin - Batman - Justice League - Justice League of America - A̶c̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶C̶o̶m̶i̶c̶s̶

Batman fights death, and Superman fights the impossible - Grant Morrison

Batman, Superman and so on usually change to fit the times; these characters were changed to fit the DCU, and those changes made them pointless.
I mean, what's the point of a Midnighter that loses fights frequently?

Being a cyborg, and the result of some accident, is fine, though. That she was the result of another, better, smarter scientist dying and sending her all of his data isn't exactly a stronger origin.

Hawksmoor, lets be honest, Hawksmoor was absolutely unlikeable post Ellis, outside of the Costa mini series.

Mike Costa would have been a brilliant choice to write this book. Also, Ian Edington.

    Ah well.

I disagree a little. The new origin changes her outlook on life and attitude dramatically; from someone who were happy and full of wonder to someone who feels like a "freak" and is borderline depressive.

With this, I agree. But again, I don't think problems with this book were caused by the writters.

I think I like the old Angie being made up of nanomachines instead of being a straight up cyborg. Yet, I think I liked the new ones origins as well on some level. And though it changed her personality, I think I felt that the Engineer became somewhat more of a deeper character by feeling that she was a freak and that she kindled a romance with the Eminence of Blades as he made her feel like a woman again. At least, in that instance but thats just my opinion.
I am Apocalypse! Look upon the future and tremble!
I am as far beyond Mutants as they are beyond you. I am eternal.
Evil? I am not malevolent, I simply am!

I would be better able to accept the changes if they had been handled well, but they weren't. I would have been ok with Midnighter getting a new costume if it had been a GOOD costume. (I was mostly ok with Apollo's costume, but hated his new hair.) I was ok with having Apollo and Midnighter being given new origins and meeting for the first time in theory, but they severely botched it by turning Midnighter into a creepy stalker, turning their 'relationship' into angst filled drama, and then proceeding to NEVER explain, in EIGHTEEN ISSUES, what the new origins actually were. I'd be fine with expanding Jack's powers, if it wasn't clearly them grasping at straws trying to find a role for him in a story that rarely occurred inside a city. And Angie... I think she suffered the worst, some hand wavey techno-gadget messing with her head so she becomes a villain?

btw. regarding Apollo, what's with all the hate for long hair? Long hair on men is sexy, I don't care what you all say, and I'm glad it's back. :p Of course, I am a big metal fan, so I may be a little biased. I just wish it was also back to being white. His hair and halo were his primary identifying characteristics aside from the costume (which he frequently destroyed anyway, so he needed something like that) so to me, that was one of the most baffling changes, since it only served to make him more generic. When Cornell confused him with Hawksmoor on the first cover it just underscored how unrecognizable the change to his hair made him. It's the same issue I have with Jack's red eyes being made blue. Like the DCU doesn't have enough blue eyed black haired white dudes. For that matter, they went and made Midnighter a black haired blue eyed white dude. I mean come on, shouldn't they be trying to make him look a bit LESS like Bruce Wayne?
