Wonder if we risk something similar happening after Azzarello leaves?

Hard to tell, depends on who they put on the book. Diggle in the Young Romance special and Williams and Blackman in Batwoman do a pretty good job of tying into Azzarello's stories. John's clearly loves WW characters from past incarnations, and Lobdel is writing her as Superman supporting character. With all this it could go either way. Despite the controversy Azzarello's run is better received than this mod bit.

As LostinFandom pointed out well, at least some other creators seem to really like what the Azzarello gang has constructed. Also, there's the sales success. So, I'd wager the Azzarello version - at least much of it - is here for the foreseeable future. Then again, Morrison's X-Men was successful, and Marvel did sweep much (thought not all, obviously) of that away (or simple didn't know what to really do with it).

As for the Mod Era - I enjoyed the tpbs (but I wouldn't want to see a return to that set-up).

Hmm guess I am just a tad bit concerned since it appears Lemire has actually just pulled a similar trick on Green Arrow. Ofc that book was repeatedly called out as terrible.

I know it wasn't quite as drastic a shake-up, but I got the same "Wait... what just happened?!" feeling when I read Byrne's first WW issue.

Yes, we are. Because of her limited use in non-comics media (especially in solo outing where she has only had a TV show over 30 years ago, a single DVD movie, and a pilot so bad it never made it to air) there is a lot more flexibility with what writers are aloud to do with her character which means every incoming writer tries to leave their mark by reinventing Wonder Woman. This has ironically insured that no one outside of Marston (and maybe Perez) has actually made a lasting mark on the character.

If anything the least likely direction for Wonder Woman after Azzarello leaves is a continuation of his story and/or style.

I also suspect Azz's tenure on the book will be complete unto itself. There might be one or two other writers who follow him, but I doubt they'll be able to keep it going more than two years. This is really his vision and his ship.

As for what DC will do after Azz wraps up his stories? Beats me! REBOOT! That's the most likely option, given history.
