Default Garth Ennis' Red Team, #1

Part one: The First-Timers. Eddie Mellinger, Trudy Giroux, Duke Wylie and George Winburn are Red Team: the NYPD's elite anti-narcotics unit. They've taken down one drug lord after another with a careful blend of meticulous surveillance and applied violence, but their latest case has even them stumped. Their frustration leads them to take extreme measures setting them on a path from which there can be no coming back. As they're about to discover, doing the wrong thing can be very, very seductive.

I enjoyed this a lot. It's always fresh to see Ennis do stuff beyond satirizing superheroes.

I'm unsure about this. But I did quite enjoy it by the end. Will reread it sometime soon

I enjoyed this too. It has a serious tone to it. Like all first issues, it introduces the red team and how they went down the path they've taken, while still being a solid read.

Plus, Cermak's art is beautiful. Kinda reminds me of Stefano Caselli. I wish he did the covers as well instead of Chaykin, though.

I saw this one the stands but the ugly cover and my minimal interest in the plot descriptions had me leaving it there untouched. Probably a mistake not to at least check this out but I was wondering if anybody had read this who isn't a big Ennis fan and what their thoughts were on it?

I feel that the CBR reviewer may have had different expectations from what was set forth. Red Team is unapologetically a crime book devoid of any gimmicks. Which is a bit refreshing, considering the market is saturated with high concept titles. If you read it with the same expectations as one of those books, than ya...this is isn't going to grab you. There aren't any robots, or monsters, aliens or over the top characters. What you do get is Ennis at his best - doing a grounded crime book, and the great part about it is that it's not-to-over the top which I feel something Ennis occasionally has done in the past (nothing is here for shock value). I felt the pacing was great for a first issue, the dialogue was solid, and the characters were believable. If I had one complain, it would be that the dialogue is pretty thick. I found myself re-reading dialogue bubbles trying to take in all the information. Likewise as someone else said, the cover art doesn't really pop at all. In typical Dynamite fashion there is like 18 different covers, none of which are really good this time around (it works for it's Pulp books, but not for this). Other than that,if you have been looking for a solid crime book - i say pull up a chair and get some popcorn, I think this one is going to be something to watch for in the near future.

What a shitty review. It's just an opinion, I guess but I wouldn't trust that person's opinion of anything. "they just talk and talk and blah blah..." Gimme a break.

I thought Red Team was good. I am excited for more.

I was waiting for something new by Ennis other than his great Battlefields. There is no one i trust bleak crime book more with than Ennis.

Decent first issue and better artist than expected.

Horrible cover though i dont care how famous that old artist is.....

I thought it was good too. Im down for the ride. The art was above my expectations. The dialogue was heavy, but I like that kind of thing if its done by a good writer. Feels like The Shield and thats not a bad thing. The covers could use some work. I'll never buy a Chaykin cover and even Ryan Sook's cover was boring. Looking forward to this series though, i hope we get at least 10-15 issues out of Garth and crew.

I liked it a lot. It was more subdued than a lot of Ennis' other the work. Not that I mind some over the top in my comics but this was a bit of a refreshing change and a really well done crime drama.
