I think it is highly unlikely that he will "land" them safely, at least not exactly. Falling from the height of a jet in flight and hitting water would have the same effect as hitting concrete. Death. I expect that instead he will get them all holding onto each other and him, and he will use his repulsors to slow their decent so that they all hit the water at "hopefully" a slow enough speed to survive the impact. It will then be up to them to swim back to the surface to complete their survival. Tony may then go after the Jet to keep it from crashing into a populated area.

Cheese Factor: 0.00

Awesome Factor: too large to measure.

Another reason I don't think it'll be cheesy is because it's always cool to see heroes save real people in interesting ways. How often does Batman or Spidey save a real life person. No I'm not counting their lovers.
