I agree. I felt exactly the same way. But we could be wrong. First issues can be difficult to impress due to their limited page count. But yeah, I thought Invincible #1 was depressingly mediocre.

I feel that way after reading the first trade of Invincible. I just don't get the appeal of Kirkman. Even Walking Dead is really formulaic and it's praised as the greatest thing ever.

If you like the personal drama side of Ultimate Spider-Man, then you will love Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane. It's a limited series from several years ago that focuses on the high school drama between MJ, Peter, Gwen, Flash, etc.

Problem is, the trades have been out of print for years. The whole series is available on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited if you're a subscriber.

Can anybody recommend some other, preferably good comics with a similar setting? As a side note, another series that I read and enjoyed for much the same reason is Robert Kirkman's Invincible. Another one that was recommended to me was Static, from Milestone Comics, but I haven't been able to find it in any of the nearby comic book stores. Thanks in advance!
If you want a teenage superhero drama with a much, much darker tone then you should read the NYX series. The story and writing are fantastic and the art is amazing
    1) Find a bad guy
    2) Be Wolverine
Ultimate Wolverine is coming back, sort of!

If you liked USM and Invincible, then you should look up the Robin series when Chuck Dixon was writing it. It is one of the best teen super-hero comics ever.

That was my favorite book growing up, and it very much was the precursor to USM. I would have recommended it if it wasn't kind of old. BQM's Batgirl is kind of its successor.

for those suggesting they were put off by the first Invincible trade, I wholeheartedly agree. Although I stuck with it for reasons unknown to me and it's easily my favourite book these days.

Look up some Clandestine stuff as well actually. Pretty fun.

You know what else reminds me of USM? The upcoming Nova series by Jeph Loeb. Issue #1 drops in two weeks, and all of the previews look and feel similar to the oldskool USM.

In that case, I recommend the upcoming spinoff series "Invincible Universe". Take that, Billy Batson!

I'm a little surprised no one has said this but Geoff John's run on Teen Titans.
Anyone who doesn't like Miles Morales is a racist.

He gave us gloomy emo Sueprboy. I'm not recommending it due to that.
