Are we talking about gimmicky covers or story lines heavily influenced by editors to tie comics together and sell issues at the detriment of good story telling? Either way they have.

Agreed. Line wide crossovers since at least Golden Age era, gimmicky covers definitely since the 90s, if not earlier.

It is weak, but so are most gimmicks and comics have been full of them for years. Not sure why this gimmick is getting more flack than others.
