    I think it would also be interesting to see a title based around mystery and intrigue, play up the detective aspects more.

    Both have been done. In Armageddon 2001 Tim becomes Batman after Bruce becomes a paraplegic, only to be murdered by Ra's al Ghul's thugs. Bruce ends up taking the mantle back to avenge him.

    In Countdown they visit an Earth wherein Jason grew up and took over the mantle (also the main GL was also Kyle Rayner, Donna took over as WW, and Chris Kent grew up to become Superman).

    We didn't get to see much of either variant, however. Personally I'd like to see The Heckler become the new Batman.
