Nah, you don't have to but well, you really should watch at least the 78 and 84 animes. That's good stuff.

Cosmo warrior zero now, i'm not a big fan of it for being honest. Nothing too bad, just an average anime.

Cosmo warrior have aliens yeah but those guys pretty much look like humans so...

Gun Frontier is western themed. There is Harlock and Toshiro of course but that's more or less the only common thing.

But that's something true for pretty much all anime with Harlock, one would think that 78 and 84 are directly linked for example but in fact not at all. Both show are independent and they could be just as well set in different universe.
