Charley's War is, quite simply, the best war comic ever made. Better than Blazing Combat, better than Harvey Kurtzman's stuff, and better than anything that's come since.

I'd go so far as to say its one of the best comics ever, period.

It stands up alongside Watchmen, Maus, Dark Knight, From Hell, Lee and Kirby's Fantastic Four, Peanuts...

    Its really that good.

Sometimes I wonder how the guy who's doing American Reaper and the clunkier bits of Savage managed to write that.

    I'd definitely second that.
Though reading a lot of them in one go is a bit grinding. Keep something bright and cheerful on hand so you can decompress. After a bit, it starts to feel like holding your head underwater.

I'll go farther: I like dark super heroes fine, just not mainstream adventures of those that should be kid-friendly like Supes, Spidey, etc.

The thing that always gets me is that these comics were written for kids. The target demographic was boys aged 10-13.

When I read the complaints about how comics are too violent for kids nowadays I think back to what I was reading at that age, Charley's War, Darkies Mob, Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Flesh, Doomlord and I think "Really??"

Yup. 'Dark Knight Returns', 'Killing Joke' and 'Arkham Asylum' are just fine. They're separate stories and you don't have to read them to dig what's going on in the bat titles. However, EVERY bat-title being about the Joker murdering people with his flayed face strapped to his skinless skull...? REALLY?

Even worse: getting Identity Crisis or Cry for Justice or Meltzers first JL arc because Superman is in them That was a lot more death and rape and dismemberment and gore and cannibalism than I'm looking for in a Superman book: that's what my Vertigo books are for.
