So I've been thinking of getting Lobdell's stuff and I was wondering whether the Annual is important in the grand scheme of his run. Is it? Is it any good?

Not really. It's mostly just editorially mandate stuff that was done for him to tie up the loose ends from Helspont. It might come into play later but who knows when.
Annual#1 plants what appear to be some major seeds for an upcoming threat. Not relevant to what's happening right now, if that's what you're wondering. It's an ok issue and will probably be important enough down the line, I suppose.
It may depend on how long before DC decides to change writers on this book again (or not).
Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
If you want any sort of resolution to the helspont story it is. I thought the 2 issues sucked, they were basically Helspont pontificating. In the Annual he FINALLY did something and gave us background and purposes.
If anything I would say skip the first two parts in the monthly issues XD
From my understanding, Lobdell said in a recent interview that this teases plans for a upcoming alien superhero book from DC. Which confuses me since I know he is already planning a Teen Titans book with Raven as the leader.
DC/Marvel reader. Mostly Superman,Batman,X-Men,Avengers fan...guess I am a fan of most comics.
I don't know if it's important but I thought it was a great read. Jurgens and Perez were solid. The Giffen issues were promising, but this was the first Lobdell issue I read, and the first non Morrison nu 52 Superman that I felt like shared the same vision of the character.
