Restricted myself to the first two pages, but I'm already digging this more than the first arc.
Call me A.J.
Hawkeye, Batman Inc., Batman, Daredevil, The Amazing Spider-Man, All New X-Men, Avengers, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, FF, Thor: God of Thunder, Detective Comics.
"And alcohol should be beneath you, as it is weakness."
Thor- "LOL, orly?"
This didn't really read like Hickman. It ... it almost felt like Jason Aaron. Ugh.
Keaton always said, "I don't believe in God, but I'm afraid of him." Well I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me are people that think Final Crisis is good.
Go Read Thor: God of Thunder (aka the book thats 4 issues in and its one of the best thor arcs ever) and tell me why reading like it was from JA is a bad thing.
just saying (i didnt think it read as great as the past 3 issues ether but it was never groan inducing like Bendis)
"Its like vodka, but for men."
Oh my.... I'm going to enjoy the hell out of reading this series.
Hickman needs to write the Thor book once Aaron is done.
That quote needs to be somebodies sig immediately.
Steve Rogers: You ready to follow Captain America into the jaws of death?
James Barnes: Hell, no! The little guy from Brooklyn who was too dumb not to run away from a fight. I'm following him."
I see Avengers hasn't improved yet with issue #4, but I'm willing to give it (maybe) 12 issues to see if Hickman can handle two books like the champ he's touted to be.
Monthlies: Cable & X-Force, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, Fearless Defenders, Savage Wolverine, Wolverine, Uncanny X-Force, Uncanny X-Men
Well, it's extremely too slow for my tastes and it doesn't have enough satisfactory action to counter that.
The panels are also boring and the coloring doesn't help those one bit IMO.
The Avengers talk about building big. Great. Cool. Whatever. But, that building dialogue and what I previously mentioned combine to create a dull read. And the villains' setup is just more of the same. Alot of talking heads under lackluster art.
Now, I haven't yet recieved my copy of issue #3, so I'm currently only sitting on what I've found to be two somewhat mediocre comics.
I didn't have high expectations going in, so thare isn't much suprise there, only exasperation.

I dropped the book after two myself, cause there was too much plot buildup and little characterization. This looks a bit better, but not enough yet to draw me back in.
Interesting: Hickman's dialogue here's a bit more quippy than I'm used to with his Marvel work -- more darkly humorous like Manhattan Projects. Those A.I.M. agents would not be out of place in Star City or Singularity or any other MP locales.
That's a good thing.
Thor's fascination with the things he drinks appears to be a running gag between the Marvel Now! writers. In Thor: GoT, he's drinking the best ale the Vikings can offer. Here, he's about to indulge in what can best be described as a very unusual microbrew and in Uncanny Avengers, he's professed an affinity for Lattes. It seems incongruous that a Latte-sipping God is suddenly disparaging Vodka as not being enough of a "man's drink." Of course, there's also the movie Thor proclaiming his delight at coffee and smashing his mug. Hahaha!
I realize some (okay, a few) have not liked Hickman's run so far but to them, I say -- Hickman's stuff is a bit like Diesel: it takes a while to get going. Also, his stuff is ALWAYS better on the 2nd and 3rd readings. You just notice so many more subtleties. Hickman's not usually a bombastic, tentpole movie-type writer (though he can write tentpole event books when pressed -- his AvX issues were among the best in that series). I'd describe his method as understated, nuanced and clever.
I honestly don't get how you can say that his arc is too slow build when in three issues he's assembled a massive team including two and a half new characters, saved the entire world from destruction, planted half a dozen seeds for future stories and had given both Thor and Captain America real bad-ass moments. On top of that, it genuinely felt like the entire world was under threat. In three issues.
"Surtur's sweaty orbs"
Lol, really?
Bad news everyone...
I really need to get around to these. I haven't actually read two and three yet (Not for lack of desire, but for lack of time). Love the vodka remark.
I agree with this and jpbl1976.
I think his books are actually worth it--as you will pick up other things-- seeds and hidden things in your second and third readings.
It's also a matter of taste and his the type of writer I like most. I like smart books that Make you work. plus his books have top notch art to go with it.
