    Default Socialism and NUTrek (abramsverse)

Is it important for people that Star Trek has to be a Moneyless Utopia?

I personally want Starfleet to stay the same and everything else is less relevant. I want most federation politicians decent with a couple of scumbags thrown in. As far as capitalism and socialism is concened i want a diverse galaxy where some races/states embracing both. Some of them would fail and some of them would succeed. It would make sense that different ways of organising wealth would work for different species.

    What are you toughts?

I am talking about the JJ Abrams kind of Federation of course.

It's doubtful that the Abrams version of Trek is going to touch on those types of issues; much like the original movies, they are built for action adventure.

What Darrell said. Unless a new TV show set in the AbramsTrekVerse get commissioned, it will just never come up.

I always felt that Trek was a bit vague about the shape of society outside of Starfleet. Babylon 5 seemed to give a better idea of what it was like to live in the wider world beyond the Earthforce.

I never bought the moneyless society. For example how do you buy stuff from other societies or even from other humans? If I want for example to buy a vintage music instrument from someone, how do I pay for it? I want to buy real (not replicated) vine, how do I pay for it? Why should I open a restaurant, if no one pays for the food. How should I pay the suppliers. If I want to buy a ferengi ship, how do I pay the ferengi?

I live in a country with a socialist government and, prepare yourself to be shocked, last i checked we do use money. (whaaaaat ?)

Anyway, what would be the point to change the federation and starfleet way of being and thinking ? That's something central in Star Trek, not just the money thing of course but the whole idea that yes, humans have managed to better themselves and are now part of a big organization of space peace loving explorers.

And to not use money is a part of this new "enlightenment" in this universe. Like it or not, that's how it is.

I predict a Flame War or thread closure in about 85 posts. Carry on.

Already like that since the original series.

And the federation is not the whole Star Trek universe by the way. Lot of different civilizations are outside of the federation, with their own rules and economic system.

    So, yeah....

cause you enjoying cooking (for others) maybe?
but is a valid question. i thought about that too while watching ds9.

hell, why cook at all? replicate!
i think the sisco´s are proud of their culture and enjoy praticing it. if u don´t have to work to earn your money, labour can become a passion or even an artform.

i think robert a. wilson wrote about a socity in which you get paid a life long rent which enables you to creativly chase your pet projects rather than being a couche potato, if you invent a way to make your job obsolet.
i think it is a charming idea. in that story, it started an utopia on earth

I assume there was some credit allowance whether or not it varied so was a set amount for everybody I don"t know. As for the reason you would open the restaurant is for the enjoyment of it. The gathering of wealth is no longer a motivation in the federation the main motivation is personal enlightenment and growth.(that was stated by Picard)

Maybe like humans did back when there was no money?
You know... trading cows, sheep, and leather?
Maybe they trade dilithium and other resources.

That's not how it has to be. That's how Gene wanted to be but there are plenty of great Trek stories that deviated from his vision. Starfleet like every military can be about sacrifice and unity but i don't see why they cannot use money or why the member states cannot have different economic systems.

There are no replicators in the Abramsverse yet and i would prefer if thos things would not exist along with holograms that can kill people.

It requires too much suspension of dispbelief.

I guess the same way the Soviet Union did stuff.
